Lineup and details for Good Friday Concert at Leeds Parish Church on Friday 2nd April 2010

St Peter's Singers and Orchestra perform Stabat Mater and Maria Theresa Mass by Franz Joseph Haydn under the directorship of Dr Simon Lindley and David Houlder at the organ.

Haydn composed six great masses between 1796 and 1802 to celebrate the name-day of the wife of his patron, Prince Nikolaus Esterhazy. Fired by the composer's religious devotion and written with his extraordinary skill, the masses are supreme examples of the Viennese Classical style. The 'Theresa' Mass, written in 1799, is one of these great sacred works, scored for solo vocal quartet, chorus and orchestra.

Titled in honor of the Austrian empress Maria Theresa, the mass embodies an astonishing synthesis of the qualities for which Haydn's great choral works are celebrated.

Haydn's Stabat Mater was praised by his contemporaries, for instance by the then famous composer Hasse. Haydn, who had sent it to Hasse in the hope that "this great and world-celebrated composer" (Haydn's words) would rectify the weaker parts of the composition, was completely surprised that Hasse "honoured the work by inexpressibly praise". Even during his life it was published on a large scale and became his most well-known sacred work.
