Highland Poppy Run

Ex-Service charity Poppyscotland is calling for Highlanders to take part in the 2012 Highland Poppy Run, which takes place on Sunday 19th August at Fort George Barracks in Ardersier.

Now in its fifth year, the Highland Poppy Run in Ardersier is a family-friendly 5 or 10k walk, run and cycle. Since its inception in 2008 it has raised over £20,000 for Armed Forces veterans and their families in Scotland and is now firmly established in the Highlands community calendar.

The Highland Poppy Run will start and finish at Fort George Barracks and participants can choose to cycle, run or walk a 5k or 10k route, which will take them through the countryside of Ardersier. As well as the walk, run and cycle, a fun-filled afternoon takes place in the grounds of Fort George Barracks with activities for the whole family. The event starts at 2pm and the entry fee is £5 for adults and £3 for children. Participants are also encouraged to raise as much sponsorship money as possible.

Poppyscotland community fundraiser Roslyn Scoular emphasised how important the event is to the charity: A growing number of veterans struggle to adjust to life outside the military and may face financial, physical or psychological difficulties. Since 2008 the Highland Poppy Run has brought in thousands of pounds, enabling us to provide life-changing support to veterans and their families. I hope that this year even more people will get behind this community event to have a fun day out and raise vital funds.
