Lineup and Details for Three Choirs Festival - Dyson 'The Canterbury Pilgrims' on Wed 25th July 2012
A rare opportunity to hear a performance of this highly colourful work which sets words by Geoffrey Chaucer. The Festival Chorus, Philharmonia Orchestra & Martyn Brabbins are joined by soloists Susan Gritton (soprano), Alan Oke (Tenor) & Simon Bailey (bass-baritone).
The Canterbury Pilgrims takes place in that most English of community institutions: the pub. The text is derived from the general prologue of Chaucers Canterbury Tales where the poets motley crew is assembled at the Tabard Inn before embarking on their voyage to the Cathedral city.
Dysons piece was very popular from its premiere in Winchester in 1930 up until the 1950s. However, it suffered almost total neglect until a renewed interest in the 1980s leading to a performance in the Barbican in 1996 and regular performances ever since.
Tickets are available through Skiddle for unreserved seats at £20. These are positioned in the Cathedral transepts and have the benefit of relay TV on large screens so you can see close ups of the action taking place on stage, choreographed by our team of technicians in real time. Great if you wish to see the sweat on the conductor's brow!
