Lineup and details for Hatful of Rain on Tuesday 3rd April 2012

Based around the captivating songs and voice of singer Chloe Overton, this ensemble bring together instrumental virtuosity, soaring harmonies and intense performances. If you Gillian Welch, Crooked Still and the soundtrack from Oh Brother, Where art Thou this is for you.

History

Hatful of Rain were formed when Chloe met double bass player, Phil Jones, at the Shoreham Folk Festival in June 2009. Finding an immediate musical connection the duo performed with banjo player, Ben McGuire for nearly a year, releasing their first EP Evangeline in early 2010. Ben left soon after to pursue different musical interests and towards the end of that year the remaining duo were lucky enough to recruit James Shenton on violin and Fred Gregory on guitar, mandolin and vocals.

The Music

Undeniable bluegrass influenced, the Hatfuls are proud of their British folk heritage which shines through their live performance. The slower numbers switch between tales of violent murder and ballads of love and loss. These original songs have a heartfelt, well-worn feel as though youve always known them and always will. The up-tempo sections have verve and brio, with thrilling interplay between mandolin and fiddle. Three part vocal harmonies delight on many a chorus.

The Band

The four piece comprises of; Phil Jones on double bass, clawhammer banjo and vocals, Chloe Overton on guitar, mandolin and vocals, Fred Gregory on guitar, mandolin and vocals and James Shenton on violin. Phil hails from the South Wales valleys and has performed everything from free jazz to cowpunk, including a spell with indie pioneers Felt. Chloe is from Kent and has been delighting audiences across the South Coast for a number of years in as a solo performer. Fred has many stage miles behind him and has a past which includes spots with Billy Fury and the Psychedelic Furs. James is one the UKs foremost classical violinists having played with everyone from the Balanescu Quartet to the Ballet Rambert and London Symphony Orchestra, completing the band with his love for traditional music.
