Lineup and details for Skinner (Hipsway) on Saturday 18th February 2012
Skinner - http://www.grahameskinner.com/
Skinner is an evolving collective of Glasgow musicians based around the music of Grahame Skinner. After a ten year hiatus Grahame decided to get back on the horse and return to the stage. The impetus for this volt face was a guest appearance with old chum, and Glasgow crooner, James Grant at the Recital rooms in the summer of 2010. The response from the crowd gave me such a buzz I decided I needed more, said Grahame.
As the singer of Hipsway, Grahame came to prominence on the Scottish music scene way back in 1985 when their much loved eponymus debut album was released. The album contained the singles Broken Years, Ask the Lord, and The Honeythief, the latter reaching number 17 on both sides of the Atlantic. After successful tours of Europe and America that old devil musical differences raised its ugly head and the bass player departed, to form Texas, leaving three member to record that difficult second album. To be honest I never found it that difficult, says Skinner, it just got lost in record company politics, and was released after we had left the company, so its no wonder no ones ever heard it.
Having now lost their drummer too, Skinner continued with guitarist Pim Jones under the moniker of Witness, recording one album for A&M before calling it a day. Now working for a living as a night club manager in London, Skinner began a long distance writing and recording dalliance with old friend and Glasgow music svengalli, Douglas McIntyre, calling themselves, at Douglass suggestion, Cowboy Mouth. The Mouth, whose line up included Gordon Wilson (drums), and Mick Slaven(bass), and Paul McGeechan (Keys) recorded their first album Life as a Dog in just five days costing less than a days studio time on previous albums; it was cheap to record but it just has an atmosphere that I love, says Skinner, thats what I want to try and create on stage this time round. We will be doing Hipsway songs and Cowboy Mouth songs but in a more quiet, intense fashion. Joining Skinner, Wilson, and McIntyre on double bass is Campbell Owen.
