Da Doo Ron Ron are extremely chuffed to welcome an ace brace of extra special superstar DJs TONIGHT! FRIDAY 25th JULY downstairs @ the Komedia in Brighton. Stars of the legendary 2-TONE record label RHODA DAKAR (Special AKA / The Specials, The Bodysnatchers) and Nick Welsh (The Selecter, Lee Perry, Skaville UK) take to the Da Doo decks TONIGHT! Friday 25th July.
Rhoda Dakar began her musical journey as the lead singer in all-girl band The Bodysnatchers who were part of the highly influential 2-Tone movement in the early 80s. The band scored a top 30 UK hit with 'Let's Do Rocksteady' in March 1980. Rhoda also guested on The Specials monumental second LP 'More Specials', singing 2 songs including the brilliant deadpan duet 'I Can't Stand It'with Terry Hall. After the demise of The Bodysnatchers, she became increasingly involved with The Specials appearing with the band on Top Of The Pops performing the classic 'Ghost Town'. When The original line-up of The Specials split and regrouped as Special AKA, Rhoda joined, recording the chilling single 'The Boiler' as well as the critically acclaimed album, 'In The Studio', which featured 'Free Nelson Mandela'. In 2007 Rhoda released her first solo CD 'Cleaning In Another Woman's Kitchen'.
Nick Welsh has performed, written and produced for such artists as Lee 'Scratch' Perry (he won a Grammy award for his work on Perry's 'Jamaican ET' in 2002), Prince Buster, Laurel Aitken, Judge Dread, The Selecter and Bad Manners.
In keeping with the Da Doo femme-centric remit, RHODA & Nick will be spinning a special, utterly one-off, never-to-be-repeated EVER set of 60s girl pop, soul and funk embracing 60s girl groups, Motown, Ska, Soul / Northern soul, Ye-Ye, Pop, Girls in the garage, Sister funk et al
Advance tickets are ONLY £5 (a saving of £2 off the £7 price on the door on the night!) available NOW! via the Komedia web-site:-
OR in-person fm the Komedia box-office / cafe (Mid-day to 8pm) or Tel:-01273-647100
Established in October 1998 (in North London), Da Doo Ron Ron is a 60s orientated club night with a unique slant. In a tribute to original 'girl power', DDRR DJs Chris 'Da Doo' King & Simon Bridger only spin female-fronted tracks from the swingin' 60s and occasionally the 50s and early pre-disco 70s, embracing; Phil Spector's Wall of Sound, Tamla Motown, girls in the garage, Soul / Northern soul, Sister funk, Yé-Yé, Latin & the occasional Japanese tune! Expect to hear discs by girl groups such as The Supremes, Ronettes, Shangri-Las, Chiffons, Crystals, Marvelettes etc, sassy soul sisters like Dusty Springfield, Etta James, Aretha Franklin, Tammi Terrell, Brenda Holloway and playful popstrels in the vein of Nancy Sinatra, Petula Clark, Brigitte Bardot, Lesley Gore, Jacqueline Taieb, France Gall, Lulu and Helen Shapiro. All spun on crackly vinyl rekkids. You will NEVER EVER hear a MALE LEAD vocal at DDRR!
Recent guest DJs include Andy Smith (Portishead), Belle & Sebastian & Ian Parton from The Go! Team.
