I Infinite

Groundbreaking immersive dance performance and interactive exhibition from award winning Tom Dale Company

An internationally successful dance piece is coming to Birmingham in June and a complementary interactive gallery exhibition will have its world premier in the city.

Set in a white digitally animated environment, I Infiniteis a stark, captivating multi-media dance installation. Graphic patterns slice through the space, glowing cubes fracture into a myriad of miniscule squares and pools of light hover in the air like oil on water. Captivating imagery and refined movement draw you within centimetres of the performer trapped between the artificial and real, digital and organic worlds. Mesmerising, melancholic and thought provoking, Dales choreography moves between robotic isolation and liquid fluidity.

I Infinite dispenses with the usual theatrical boundaries between audience and performer. Free to roam around the performance the audiences witness at close quarters the refined movement so often missed in more traditional spaces. Existing somewhere between the digital and organic worlds ourdancer embarks on a captivating journey to the infinite.

For the world premier standalone exhibition I Infinite Tom has collaborated with interactive media designer Noel Murphy to create an environment in which the audience is invited to respond to, and engage with, the space itself. Using interactive software and technology the space will in turn respond to those in the room.

Asked about his choice of Birmingham to premiere the exhibition, Tom said The midlands is a very supportive area for artists to work in, many of the people we work with are based in the region including Noel and Barrett Hodgson (also a collaborator with Birmingham REP). In fact we like it here so much that the company is relocating to the midlands later in the year!

A number of leading companies are currently undertaking investigations into the crossover potential between visual art and contemporary dance. I Infinite at mac birmingham is taking Tom Dale to the forefront of these explorations that are striving to develop new audiences for galleries and dance.

Prior to the Birmingham dates Tom Dale Company will be performing I Infinite at Macau Arts Festival, China and Zagreb Dance Week, Croatia.

TDC use a palate of physical techniques, philosophies and principles alongside leftfield electronica music in the creation of its unique and unpredictable style. TDCs Edinburgh Fringe debut in 2008, RISE, was a 5 star sell out sensation and Guardian Pick Of The Week. ROAM (2010) continued this trend and sealed the companys reputation for testing the boundaries of contemporary dance practice. I Infinite is a distinct change of dynamic from Toms previously urban inspired work. A short 2011 Fringe run (as part of the prestigious British Council Showcase) was hailed as a triumph by critics and audiences alike.
