Sadly, my expectations were misplaced. This time around, Platform have abandoned the glammor of The Black Box, and opted for a smaller, (definatley cheaper) less central venue. In the heart of Loyalist Sandy row, where just last week a man was attacked outside the neighbouring hotel, this is a far cry from the lively Belfast city centre, and already, half of the punters have been deterred from attending. When I finally arrive, after shifting through the side streets and alleyways trying to find it, I take my seat in what is a very cramped, and cold room, definatley not your conventional venue for the arts. And while this may be 'edgy feel' that the promoters are going for, it is lost on me and many of the
attendees by the end of the night. This is a 'bring your own drink' event, in other words, 'at £10 a ticket we were too stingy to book a real venue with an actual bar' event. As the show starts my view is obstructed by a standing individual due to an insufficient supply of chairs. However, she eventually sits on a table just as the first two models make their way down the spiral staircase to the centre of the room. As always they look great, the make-up artists and fashion designers have once again done a wonderfull job, and this is consistent throughout the night. However the same could not be said for the accompanying music. The first two acts on 'sing' over prearranged music samples, immediately losing the title of 'a live act', vocally I can't help but feel that someone is strangling a large family of cats, and is projecting it through the speakers. The next band on are a punk band, and as expected, their sound is lost is a mass of profanity, that clearly does not appeal to a single soul in the room. The last bad on are a blues band, and actually enjoyable, however their music comes to an abrupt end when the mics cut out for 10 minutes, signalling an end to what has been a terrible experience, let alone a bad night - I want my £10 back!
Needless to say this was the worst platform showcase yet, there wasn't even an actual 'platform' for the models and bands to perform on. Maybe the next one will be better, and given the two previous shows which were great, I think a second chance is warranted, however I will not be returning to that venue ever again.
