And what a delightful line-up we indeed have to kick things off at matter in January, welcoming back Mr Hudson to headline another brilliant party. Mr Hudson’s been a busy man recently, collaborating with some guy called Kanye West on his 808 & Heartbreak album, as well as working on his own solo material. Accompanying Mr Hudson will be South London’s Master Shortie, combining Daisy Age-era old skool hip hop with fresh electro-pop in a way that one might be inclined to describe as ‘wonky’. Round out the live side of things are bedroom pop whiz-kid Esser and Drums of Death, who’ll be both entertaining and unsettling the crowd in the most glorious of fashions with respectively his grimy bounce and scary facepaint.
With a live line-up that strong, you might forgive us if we took the foot off the gas a bit when it came to booking the DJs. Well, you may have forgiven us, but we’d not forgive ourselves, so in addition to our Wonky residents we’ve brought on board one of the year’s hottest emerging acts, and a proper French house legend. Friendly Fires have caught everyone’s attention in 2008, with a fine debut album, some raucous live performances and a set of great singles and remixes. Fred Falke meanwhile is, alongside Alan Braxe and a pair of robots whose name escapes us, one of the key proponents of French disco house, a remixer of considerable note and co-producer of two of dance music’s most influential records, ‘Rubicon’ and ‘Intro’. With Ou est Le Swimming Pool and Too Many Tramps also manning the controls, it’s altogether a pretty big start to the Year of Wonky, 2009. Make getting tickets for matter on January 16th your resolution.
