The Rokettes Release Debut Single
2nd Jul 2009
Rare talent, great songs and an original voice is a combination that’s not gone unnoticed, and on her first release El immediately attracted the kind of industry excitement that most bands can only dream about. Music industry bible Record Of The Day honoured both A & B sides of her single ‘With Those Eyes / Last Night On Earth’ on consecutive days - an almost unprecedented feat for any artist, let alone for a comparatively new talent. NME, The Guardian, The Fly and more, soon followed with their reviews.
Elena's first two albums, ‘Glimpse’ and ‘Paint It Gold’, were met with a wealth of positive reviews, and received airplay across various BBC regional shows. The single ‘Pink Punk,’ taken from the second album, received airplay on Tom Robinson’s Introducing show on BBC6.
‘raw retro mix recalling the post-punk New York scene that birthed Blondie, Talking Heads and Television...Elena's voice...now there's a seductive thing - part-growl, part-whisper, completely horny' - Rock n Reel Magazine
‘Elena gives a gravel throated performance that drips with elegance. This is a rowdy, streamlined stadium filler, which twists and turns around a rumbling agile chorus.’ - RockCity
‘Undeniably original and positively bewitching with it. A big prospect whose talent has gone largely unnoticed by media and the music industry so far but surely not for much longer.’ - Record Of The Day
The Rokettes are that rarest of things in 21st century rock music - a genuine outsider. A rock outfit fronted by one of the most distinctive, charismatic and passionate rock-chicks in the world today. Aside from the sheer quality of the songwriting (sassy, melodic, sinuous and lyrically uncompromising as it is) the most attention-grabbing aspect of El’s records, is undoubtedly the remarkable lead singer’s voice; a mercurial creature that can soar like a songbird and then growl like a mountain lion in the merest heartbeat; memorably described in Logo magazine as 'falling somewhere between Alison Goldfrapp’s lupine howl, Marianne Faithfull’s dissolute croon and Chris Martin’s faltering, edge of orgasm stammer.'
El is compared to everyone from Marianne Faithful to Cerys from Catatonia due to her rough croon. Both comparisons are apt, as are the similarities to Coldplay due to her dark, melancholic tunes. Wherever you decide to put her she’ll sit at the top of the pile due to her stunning vocals.
‘An undiscovered gem that has the world at her feet’ - Planet Loud
'A husky-voiced Italian whose specialty lies in melodic, ballsy rock...exhilaratingly authentic and emotional…’ - Wears The Trousers Magazine
El said of The Rokettes - ‘I've had couple of great albums performing under the name Elena. ‘Glimpse’ and ‘Paint It Gold’ are mainly my own work with the collaboration of some great musicians I have met along the way... In the last few years two of these musicians have touched me and inspired me so much that I have been itching to do a project with them. Here we are, my self, Ben "Fast Fingers" Walker and Merjin "Ginger Prince" Royaards.
You can catch The Rokettes live at the following venues, with a Summer tour to be announced soon
