Standon Calling: World Class Jazz for Next Generation

1st Jul 2009

Award winning musician Femi Kuti is set to inject a little bit of Lagos into Standon for a rare and special performance. Eldest son of legendary afrobeat originator Fela Kuti, Femi will storm the main stage backed by his incredible 17-piece band the Positve Force (complete with his twelve year old son on sax!). His current album ‘Day By Day’ was released after a seven year sabbatical and his latest incarnation sees him rise like a phoenix and deliver one of music’s most unforgettable audio assaults. Expect afrobeat from the very source, screaming sax lines and deep hip shaking guitar vamps.
Claiming that he was of the "Angel Race" and not from Earth, but from Saturn, Sun Ra was one of the greatest jazz artists of the last four decades. A prolific recording artist (right up to his death in 1993) and frequent live performer, his music ranged from keyboard solo gigs to big bands of over 30 musicians. His music touched on virtually the entire history of jazz, from ragtime to swing music, from bebop to free jazz; he was also a pioneer of electronic music, space music, free improvisation and was one of the first musicians, regardless of genre, to make extensive use of electronic keyboards. The Arkestra led nowadays by Marshall Allen (who celebrated his 85th birthday in May this year), remaining a key band member for a staggering 35 years! Expect a kaleidoscopic set that pays homage to one of modern music’s true greats. Simply unmissable…
In true Standon form there are also performances from the new rising stars of the contemporary scene. Fresh from the success of his latest album featuring legendary jazzers Keith and Julie Tippet, Ben Lamdin aka Nostalgia 77 will play an exclusive festival set with his 9-piece band. His cover version of Seven Nation Army with Alice Russell has helped bring his “Jazz Jihad” mission to a wider audience! Aiming for an edgy sound, whilst also continuing to search for a more personal expression, Nostalgia 77’s influences include free and spiritual jazz as well as 60’s funk and soul, touched with Afro beats. In addition there’s explosive action from the gypsy infused 6-piece Deathray Trebuchay whose debut single was produced by none other than mercury music nominated drummer Seb Roachford (Polar Bear, Acoustic Ladyland).
With the site set in the rolling countryside only 35 minutes from London, Standon is easy accessible by train, car, coach or spaceship…it’s set to be the musical picnic you and your friends have been waiting for...
