Sophie Webster Opens Manchesters Snow Slide

5th Dec 2008

Coronation Street star Brooke Vincent is joining the Alpine rush in Manchester’s Piccadilly Gardens.
The actress, who plays Sophie Webster in the ITV1 soap, is taking a break from filming the Weatherfield Christmas cliffhangers to whizz down the snow slide set up in the heart of the city centre.
The 50m (165ft) long slide in Piccadilly Gardens is a new addition to Manchester’s festive attractions and promises an adrenaline-fuelled thrill in the winter chill.

Brooke, 16, who is from Denton, Manchester, will be finding out for herself what it is like to climb to the top of the 7.5m (25ft) high slope, sit in a large tyre and rush downhill. Skiddle will be joing Brook on Monday so expect to hear what it's like and see all the photos then!

Brooke said: “I always love Manchester at Christmas and this snow slide sounds like a lot of fun, it’s right up my street.”

The open air slide – the first of its kind in the North West - is set up close to the fountain in Piccadilly Gardens and opens on Thursday 4 December for one month, closing again on Sunday 4 January. It is open until 9pm every day apart from Christmas Day.

After reaching the bottom, sliders can enjoy the Christmas lights and a refreshing drink or snack in the alpine chalet. Or they could have another go. Each slide costs just £1.50 and there is no advance booking required. Riders also do not need any skill or previous experience.

Also in Piccadilly Gardens this year is a dazzling 10m (32ft) high ‘sphere’ Christmas tree, made of brightly coloured orbs.

Visitors to Manchester city centre can enjoy the biggest- ever range of festive attractions for Christmas 2008.
The traditional 11m-high fir tree in Albert Square has a state-of-the-art animated lights display and stands in front of the redesigned Santa platform on the Town Hall.

And on the western fringe of the city centre, the Spinningfields Ice Rink is bringing some magic and sparkle to the glass-fronted towers in the new Spinningfields business district.

Councillor Pat Karney, City Centre Spokesperson for Manchester City Council said: “The snow slide is an exhilarating and exciting addition to the Christmas attractions offered in Manchester and is yet another reason for families to visit the city centre over the festive season. I’m sure it’s going to be a very popular addition to our growing list of seasonal activities and shows yet again why Manchester is one of the most popular UK cities at this time of year.”
