Shooting at Seone in London (Updated)
7th Oct 2008
A man killed inside a nightclub in south London was shot once at close range, police have said. (reads BBC News)
Update: The victim has now been named as Erol Davis aged 24 years. We have failed to get a comment from SEOne with regards to this matter, and their website has no comment. They have however, managed to update their photo gallery from the night which I'm sure you will agree is probably the most sensible thing they could of done. Or not...
The 24-year-old victim was found with gunshot wounds at the SE1 club in Weston Street, Bermondsey, early on Sunday morning.
He was taken to an east London hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Police have begun a murder inquiry.
Officers believe the unnamed victim was with friends when he was approached by the man who shot him.
No arrests have been made.
Appealing to clubbers who saw the incident to come forward, Det Ch Insp Adnan Qureshi said: "We know that the club was still busy at the time of the murder and there will have been a number of witnesses to the murder and events that have preceded it.
"Naturally when shots were fired the crowd dispersed and many left the scene."
A post-mortem examination will take place in the afternoon.
Officers from Operation Trident are investigating the incident and said they are keeping an open mind about the motive.
Is this a sign of an ever changing London? Should we be worried about going out in seemingly safe places, and should the clubs be doing more to protect us by operating more vigorous searching at the doors. Or is this an unfortunate incident in which we should stand united about gun crime. Your comments are welcome below.

Security and the venue have to take responsibility for this. If you have a club then you need to be able to ensure the safety of your clients. Why have a metal detector and not turn it on. I know for sure that the promotors requested tight security and were assured by the club that the metal detectors would be working. I have followed these promotors for years and the crowd they attract are the older crowd or the younger ones that appreciate and are there for the music. People on the sound side said there were too many young people with attitude just looking for trouble with anyone. The people that killed Errol were obviously looking for Errol but the consequences could have been much much worse with more innocent people getting hurt. Check out the promotors website zoo groove for their statement. My condolences go to Errol's family and friends. We all need to act to stop this.
Personally you could not have had such a congregation on black young men, without something poppin off in the wrong direction. I would not have blamed it on the venue and its associates, being there I would have said you were lucky if you were coming out alive and unscathed. What's new, we all know the drill :(
What a night is was badly orgaised and the promotors, well who were they because the crowds that were there were not for that type of rave, young moody males... toooo much testerone, not enough ladies and beef to be settled...time to stop raving me thinks...

"As a consequence of what happened certain changes to our procedures will be put in place. This may delay your entry to the venue and we ask for your understanding and patience in this regard whilst these procedures are implemented."
Roughly translates to. You will be made to walk underneath a metal detector which we should have turned on in the first place.
Wow, what a warm and heartfelt statement that is.
"By now many of you will have read or heard about the incident that took place at SeOne London in the early hours of Sunday October 5th 2008.
We are sorry that it was necessary to block access to our website until the situation became clearer and until we were able to confirm what was going to happen in relation to future events.

Security is always going to be flawed whilst the smoking area exists as anyone walking down the street can pass anything they like to the person inside the "pen" and there's no checking of people returning from the "pen" to the club.
I have been going to SEOne frequently for the last 6 years and overall security has been very good, in contrast to when i first went where they had a very aggressive security team
At 8.06am today somebody posted a comment which is half true. No i do not think it was the security's fault - there are two many ways to get a weapon into a club. However his comment that Erol Davis was one of the "bad ppl" who carried guns seems interesting. I can't help thinking that this seemed like some kind of Gangland Assassination - beef from "Road" being taken into a nightclub. Word on "Road" was the the young man who lost his life was involved in the wrong kind of activities - however does that mean he should loose his life in such a tragic way? Of Course Not!!
I feel sorry for his family - such a tragic loss of life. I can Guarantee that his "So Called" friends will not be going to the police to report what they saw. As Black people we are so stupid - we'd rather throw off grief by blaming EVERYBODY expect the killer.
How can you blame hourly paid employees for the murder of a young man? Thats like blaming the airport staff at the two airports that the two flights that crashed in to the twin towers took off from!!! Are they responsible cos they didnt find the blades etc that the hijackers used to take over the planes??
Yes more checks and measures could have been implemented - but it's the person who pulled the trigger who is to blame- NOBODY ELSE.
BLACK-ON-BLACK CRIME + IGNORANCE = NO HOPE.
Erol's friends obviously saw the killer so why have they not given a statement to the police ?
Is it because they are seeking revenge ? Was there an ongoing feud between 2 gangs that was taken inside the club??
If I just witnessed my friend being shot in the head I will be giving as much information to the police as possible.
Also there must have been other witnesses so why has noone come forward ?
If we want a safer environment at the clubs we attend it is OUR responsibility to help the police to put away these violent thugs who have no respect for life !!
security did the best they could it is the fault of the person doin the shooting-----
I'm not blaming security I know they have a very difficult job they have to do
Security was to balme i was there the metal detectors was NOT TURNED ON if so the gun would not have got in i saw atleast 4 ppl with guns i grew up in the manor and i know the bad ppl and all the bad ppl was there and erol davis is one of them.
peace to all
Let's not loose sight of the fact Security have one of the hardest jobs to do - especially at an "Urban Rave" (sorry but this Kenny Dope Rave was blantantly Urban) controlling a groups of aggressive men - with no powers whatsoever and try and keep EVERYONE SAFE - INCLUDING THEMSELVES? - but from what I saw the security did a good job - i saw them break up at least two fights, and I saw them moving through the crowd, getting people to put out their cigarettes/weed and take off hats. The queuing system was good - nobody rushed the doors or anything.
Why whenever there is a problem do people always push the blame onto others? Many people are writing coments that they saw this happenins and that happening, Did anybody bring it to the managers attension? No because it's not my problem. But as soon as something happends there quick to point hte finger.
It comes to something when we're blaming security for someone being killed with a gun, lets face it guns are illegal. My condolences go out to the family.
I was at the SE1 on saturday night, Yes it was a tough night, But i belive the security did the best with the staff they had.People are writeing they saw this they saw that. Funny nobody has come forward as a witness with detials of the shooting, or do thoese people just see what they want to see. Try blameing the fool who goes for a night out with a gun.
WHY DO PEOPLE BLAME THE SECURITY, CLUB THE POLICE IT IS THE PEOPLE GOING THERE TO DO THIS WHO R TO BLAME. NO MATTER HOW GOOD THE SEARCH THEY CANT SEARCH YOU IN SENSITIVE AREAS
security did the best they could it is the fault of the person doin the shooting
I was there, problems started with door staff taking tickets, then reselling them to people outside, also why don't these clubs have a no trainer/jeans policy? you would see less so called "badman" in these raves, why have metal detectors & don't use them? The search i got was a patty down of my chest area? whats that about?
when will the club re open
"of course its securitys fault theres metal detectors etc that are unmanned, one of them was in on it standard fix up police....."
Only an ignorant fool would think and write this, why is it the securities fault? .. How comes not the gunman? .. Is it really to much to ask for black people to come out without being intent on harming and killing others?. I don't understand why we are the only friggin culture that behave in this manner and then have this empty pouring of grief whilst we blame everyone besides the real culprits.
in the 1st place?? The mentality of these morons sadden me. The shooter was obviously going there looking for trouble. How else would you explain his motive for taking a gun ?
I was at the door and about to leave when I saw the security rush into one of the rooms & the next thing I heard was the gun shot. So security were obviously going to break something up but unfortunately they were too late.
of course its securitys fault theres metal detectors etc that are unmanned, one of them was in on it standard fix up police.....
This is long but please read to the end.
I have heard so much talk about Security being poor and people basically blaming security and the club for this terrible incident. THIS IS NOT THE CASE. I agree that SEONE management have a hell of alot to answer for and the fact that the metal detectors weren't switched on is criminal - and the club should be blamed for that - not the security. I've raved many times in the past and I used to be involved in gang-related behaviour in my youth - and I will tell you this - if you want to get a gun in a club - YOU WILL. People are asking how did security let people inside a rave with a gun - ITS NOT A MACHINE GUN HE WAS SHOT WITH - probably something as small as a mobile fone - and that can easliy been concealed in the front of your briefs or if your wearing boots u can dismantle it and put a piece under one foot and the rest under the other. I've changed my life now and I teach the dangers of gun and knife crime to youth's in London - but i've carried guns into clubs in the past and no metal detector or search would ever find a gun on me unless I was asked to take my shoes off.
Also the club is open all day before a big event like that - all it takes is for one of the promoters or their workers who are there from the daytime to bring it into the venue before security have started and its in. Also there was a shambolic smoking area - both at the back of the VIP area and in the main room and anybody could hand something to their mates and its in.
I was also there on the night - security seemed like they had their work cut out - 3000 people and probably only 20-30 of them for the worst kind of crowd? There should of been 60 odd there.
Searches were ok, but not as rigorous as it should have been for this kind of night. And security more than anybody have the biggest incentive to search everyone thoroughly as if theres an incident inside the club then they dont want to be shot or stabbed whilst trying to eject someone or trying to break up a fight do they?
Let's not loose sight of the fact Security have one of the hardest jobs to do - especially at an "Urban Rave" (sorry but this Kenny Dope Rave was blantantly Urban) controlling a groups of aggressive men - with no powers whatsoever and try and keep EVERYONE SAFE - INCLUDING THEMSELVES? Yes mistakes were made - but from what I saw the security did a good job - i saw them break up at least two fights, and I saw them moving through the crowd, getting people to put out their cigarettes/weed and take off hats. The queuing system was good - nobody rushed the doors or anything.
ITS THIS MORONS FAULT - THE KILLER - NOT THE SECURITY. BLAME THE SOCIETY THAT WE ARE IN - NOT THE PEOPLE WHO ARE TRYING PROTECT IT. IM SURE THAT WE WILL ALL LEARN MORE ABOUT THE EVENTS THAT HAPPENED ON THAT HORRIBLE NIGHT/MORNING.
RIP ERROL DAVIS - YET ANOTHER LIFE LOST TO THIS NEVER ENDING CYCLE OF BLACK-ON-BLACK CRIME. MY PRAYERS GO OUT TO YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY.
I went to the Louie Vega do in May and was surprised even then at some of the hood rats in the place. We can all call out the security and say they didn't do this or didn't do that, but really shouldn't it be us that takes the responsibility for this sh#t that's going on!!. How many times have you heard of an incident happening and known of or heard on the grape vine who the culprits were. Of the people that were standing next to this guy when he was shot how many of them have gone to the police to let them know what they saw or have since heard (I can hear some of you sniggering) If we aren't prepared to stand up to these scum bags why the hell should you expect "security to sort it out". If you ask me this is a black thing and will continue to happen if we stay ignorant and let these hood rats continue to destroy and ruin lives and communities.

I'm not blaming security I know they have a very difficult job they have to do, but it does appear they dont seem to be doing their job so well in SEOne - especially if searches were minimul and metal detectors were off.
I read someones comments below about increasing the price of the ticket, at the end of the day a licensed premises only gets a licence by adhering to strict regulations. I'm sure enough money is made off the bar to cover the cost of security, as well as the fee that promoters sometimes have to pay clubs to put the night on in the first place - so its not about money. Security can appear to be jumped up steroid monsters sometimes, but then i've met a lot of really nice doormen intent on doing their jobs properly.
I dont particulary want to be made to feel like a criminal upon entering a club, but at the same time if it reduces the risk of me getting hurt then i'm well game for that and would more than happy walk through a metal detector upon entering. I don't know, its a lose lose situation, we hear so much on the news about violence in every day life it makes me sick. Skiddle is based in Preston, we go out in Manchester, luckily this stuff isnt happening as much or in such public places. The day it does im off to live in a field.
I was an active clubber until recently and after this I know I've maded the right decison to wind up my dancing days.
Have been to seone many times and when this happened I said to a friend that the easiest way would of been to pass something through the smoking area.
I've seen people have there stash topped up this way and security did not notice.
SEone does have cameras in the roof so maybe they have picked up the incident.
Its a real shame that things have happened this way.
does anyone know if the club will reopen as unit 7 is still closeed after a shooting close by let alone actually on the clubs site.
I was at SeOne on Saturday too and admit I was surprised by the crowd, alot more men and a much younger crowd then expected. Saying that me and my friends had a great time and really enjoyed ourselves. Luckily I had just left before the shooting took place. The question that needs to be asked is how was a gun let into the venue in the first place? The venue and Security have to answer this question. Obviously we also need to address the fact that certain people feel that they need to walk with a gun too and ask why in this society do people feel they need to proove themselves with a gun. It is a sad situation when you go out raving to have a good time and the end result is someone loosing their life.
My condolences go out to the family.
I was there that night and at the previous event too. I felt this time, the event was arranged more professionally and the queuing system was excellent. I believed the event was organized to the highest standard. I personally felt though that 20% of the security were on the ball and the other 80% were happy to ignore certain events. With a club that size why are there not camera's inside the venue where a security room can monitor what is happening with the crowds and radio through to the staff whom can react immediatley ?!! The promoters of the event have always done there best to avoid this situation and from past experience I have never witnessed trouble like this. All I can say is all clubs should have metal detectors NO MATTER what, everyone should be checked as we are now living in sad times of severe violence and gun crime - not to mention terrorism. So, come on Club Owners - step up your health, safety & security and invest money into the venues to make it safe for all to enjoy - and not blame the promoters. Sad night and a sad loss of a young man whom had all his life ahead of him - respect to his family too xx
Me and the girlfriend travelled down from wolves on sat following on from the great louie vega night 6 months earlier. The security was light.....no where near as many heads as previously.
The crowd was all ages but I'm sorry to say there were just too many groups of younger boisterous lads. Loads of people knocking gear out (wouldn't be suprised if this was linked) and the smell of weed from when we walked in at midnight. My girlfriend was knocked clean over in the rush of this poor mans friends attempting to re-enter the club to find the murderer. After 20 years of clubbing we are seriously considering our future......wont be venturing south of the river again. Soulman....we are booked for southport and you are right.....the vibe there over the last 18 months has changed for the worse and you guessed it.....lots of groups of young moody geezers. Condolencies to the deceased's family. keep the faith. Peace an out.
Im from South London and I offer my sincerest condolences to the friends and family of Erol Davis... Should they have the time and energy to read my humble post here.
I am fairly young but I dont go out that much as I am committed to a dream perhaps and that is where my motivations lie. I don't propose to be using this innocent young persons premature exit from this world as a springboard for my views, no... that is not my intention.
However I wanted to state that as I hear much talk of the errors made by security at this nightclub I can't help thinking. Security is like the last line of defence, security and defence infrastructure is used to pre-empt crime in a last ditch effort by overall authority of an area to be seen to be doing everything they can to help, protect and serve.etc.
Security does what it does and expects no gratitude or acknowledgement, security could always be greater though perhaps pay a little more to enter a nightclub to cover this extra cost or even increase your taxes so ends meet at the administration level. But security cannot answer to all of the problems, issues and events that society is routinely forced to endure... namely now the loss of this wonderful person only 2 years older than I.
Communication. Whoever I meet, wherever I go and whatever I do I know that the result of everything that responds to me is the direct result of all communications I put out into the world. These types of horrible atrocities are in my opinion the direct results of negative or even deeper fractured and frustrated, communications.
We can talk about it all we want and demand higher security, more authoritative control and endlessly formalise informal human interaction. Until one day we wake up and have to sign a contract just to be able to make direct eye contact with our wives or children. No I dont feel this is an exaggeration.
ID cards are on the horizon if you live in Britain and if we allow it this day will be used like a token believe me... one extra coin in the machine, one extra vote on a stat sheet saying... 'yes' control, suppress, survey and secure me JUST a little more.
The problems we so desperately want to correct are within our reach and more importantly within our power. I dont profess to know more than neither those who are in charge nor those in question here today but I do know in my heart that given the chance everyone that has died in London this year alone would want to talk people out of destructive social behaviour patterns.
I feel so strongly about this I may even abandon all of my other career plans just so I and those around me will sleep peacefully in the knowing that they: people of our great nation, will one day not face these trials and tribulations ever again like we are right now.
We need to talk about this, thats all we need to do and we need to do it now.
P, Croydon.
i dont like the fact every one is making out like all trouble started ever the whole night was down to youths, age has nout to do with it i have never been a nob head and never will be, gun and knife crime is becoming a ever growing problem in our society and i feel that more could be done in the way of security in all clubs through out the UK. There is no room for mistakes now.
it is also not always the obvious culprits that are the problem as i went to school with some one who stabbed my mate repeatedly, fortunatly he lived, but i would never had said he had it in him, the thing that worries me the most is that he got away with it without a sentence or community sentence.
Maybe the question that should be asked - is the English Leagal system to weak?
Should there be tougher laws on possesion of a offencive weapon?
Please tell me if im wrong but there is young people being killed and its getting more and more upsetting and the victims are getting younger and younger its just a waste of life.
First of all, I would like to forward my condolences to the family and friends of Erol Davis. Yet again, another young life has been taken.
I was there on Saturday, as I love soulful and uplifting house music and the people, vibe and atmosphere the music represents. I know that the sad incident which occured on Sunday morning is not a true representation of what house music is about. I have been to a number of events that the promoters of this event put on, and at know time has an incident like this occured as they attract a more mature crowd. The raves are always well organised and I always feel safe. I am sure that they are also devastated by this horrific incident as they have a well respected reputation and they ensure that the people that attend there events are safe. The security at SEONE club on the other hand have alot to answer for. I am by no means a judge however; as other people have mentioned, the metal detectors were not working, and they have a policy where you must hand in your coat and I saw a number of males walking around in groups with there coats on. I also witnessed a number of people smoking weed and other drugs. The security might as well have not been there, because they had know real presence.
This was evidenced by an uneducated person, who probably can't even spell respect deciding that this was the best forum to take another human beings life. I don't care what the dispute was about really but; I can guarantee that if this individual was put in a position where he had to fight another man one on one he wouldn't do it! Because, only a coward carries a gun or a knife. A real man doesn't carry on like that! I do hope that the person responsible for this is brought to justice, as this has to stop. People don't pay there hard earned money to come out and have a good night and then be forced to witness horrific acts of cold blooded violence.
RIP Erol Davis
Been there twice - on both occasion, did not get searched.
They looked in my bag, touched my arms and legs and I was in.
After saying that, I guess security try their best.
some 1 started banging straps up in the dance!

Does smoking weed make you the kind of person that carries a gun? I don't smoke weed i just think its funny everyone is associating it
bad crowd security did the best
BEEN TO THE CLUB LOTS OF TIMES THE SECURITY HAS ALWAYS BEEN GOOD. ON THE NIGHT SECURITY BROKE UP THE FIGHTS AS THEY HAPPENED. DID NOT SEE ANY RANDOM SEARCHES WE ALL GOT SEARCHED WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A GOOD NIGHT WHICH WAS SPOILT
This is horrible, the poor man i was there security was good stopping bad boys from smoking there sh##t and fight with there champain bottles what more do u want them to do , what about the one that done the shooting these morons haven't got a f**king clue everyones making comments what did u lot do about it ... nothing look at ur selfs ......
went to seOne for the first time on sat. funky, soulful house music. I was suprised to hear that this shooting had happened.doorman were great see them split a couple off fights up ,i got searched and was in the cue and see others getting searched no problems
The security was terrible. My friend broke up a fight at the bar whilst "security" man was standing on the bar supposedly watching.
The search going in was practically non existant. It is also easy to smuggle stuff in through the smoking area.
The night that was on is normally a very mature up for it crowd. Just there for music, plenty of smiley faces and very friendly people. Unfortunatley there were a few young people in there with attitude, blatantly smoking weed with just a general moody attitude.
I also had left by the time of the shootiong, but whilst on our way home my friends and I were commenting about it not being the usual type of crowd. Then I found out at sunday lunchtime what had happened.
This is not supposed to happen in club land. What happened to the days of leaving your worries at the door and just going out for a good night out.
My condolences to the Family and Friends of Errol.
Im never going out again thats for sure! their gonna be at Southport next youll see. BLAP BLAP BLAP
ive been to seone loads of times and they never search anyone properly
i was there on the night. the lack of sercurity and their performance was a discrace. the metal detectors did not work searches were not thorough .there was no metal detectors and very little searches when you entered through the vip enterance.the atmosphere was bad. after the shooting sercurity were nowhere to be seen, they hid in the cloakroom. people were just left to it, there was no annoucements direction or plan. in my opionion it took the police at least 45mins to enter the club and when they did they were more interested in pushing and assaulting innocent bystanders than looking for the culprit who had shot the young man. i was in the same room as where the gun went off as was hundreds of people and there did not appear to be any statements names or information taken from the police. i would advice people just dont go there. my condolences go out to the victim his family and friends.

I can't believe the club have put a photo gallery of the night online but haven't made an official comment anywhere about their apparent lack of security. Metal detectors are a new thing to me when it comes to clubs, as far as I am aware we simply don't have them in Manchester. However we don't have half the gang trouble that London does - so if there are metal detectors in clubs I would expect for them to be turned on and actively used!
Worried good person you are spot on. Sadly the days of quality house music nites are over due to scumbags without a clue turning up. Thankfully I have enjoyed more than enough over the past fiftheen years.
I went to seOne for the first time on saturday. I only went as it was supposed to be an older, more sophisticated crowd enjoying good, funky, soulful house music. I was suprised to hear that this shooting had happened.
I thought the security was poor and there were a lot of people smoking weed and taking drugs. This wasnt supposed to be a rave scene
I was there and was oblivious to any trouble going on, the vibe seemed.
The blantant weed smoking was my only issue. It's strange something came over me and told me to get out of the place and just as I was about to leave the club I heard the gunshot. I do not know whether the victim was innocent or was invovled in an altercation with the shooter but no one desrves to die this way. As evertone as mentioned above the security was poor, the metal detectors were switched off and i was barely patted down by the security. I am too old for this nonsense my clubbing days are over.

The man who was fatally shot has now been named as Erol Davis, 24
I've been clubbing in SeOne quite often and noticed often changes of security but last Saturday was worst security ever.
Metal detectors didn't work before when I was raving there.
We came inside and none of us got searched as they said random search.
This awfull tragedy didn't surprise me. Disgrace security shame on them.
My condolences to the victims family & friends.
Soulful House Music is all about decent and good people creating a happy, positive vibe, dancing, expressing yourself and loving the music - not being there to pose, act like a bad bwoy and cause trouble.
Those who want to do that can f**k off back to their own souless UKG / Hip Hop / R n B scene and shoot each other up there - We don't need that twisted gansta attitude in ours.... "respeck?" these morons haven't got a f**king clue....
whoeva done this shud be ashamed of themself and rot in hell.. that man cud be leaving behind kids and everything all b'coz of sum immature yute.. is terrible.. is like where can you go now ah days wivout idyat boissz runnin up n shootin up da place?
is Fcking disgusting
I've been to hundreds of events @ SE One, but this one was the worst, like everyone else was saying, the metal detectors were switched off and security was minimal, it was a joke, hence why I never stayed, after the first fight, I left and wasn't @ all surprised the shooting happened, but it shouldn't have happened and I personally think the event should have been made to finish early, cos the tension levels were high, I send my condolences to the victims family & friends.

This is horrible, the poor mans family.
I'm not surprised something like this has happened... I was there but left early and noticed that despite the heavy metal studs on my top and the jewelery I was wearing the metal detector did not go off.
To be honest I thought it was a really rough and immature crowd with agressive youths and people smoking weed out in the open.
Not cool... guess is it was a good thing Kenny Dope didn't turn up!
It's a disgrace really. This was the fault of the venue. They are meant to protect the ravers, and their venue. Instead they insisted on NOT having the metal detectors switched on which I noticed straight away, NO metal detecting wands, and NOT enough security for the amount of people in the venue. This has really put a dampner on future events that I attend, I'm thinking do I wear a vest when working in clubs now?? The person who did this is a known person, CCTV from the venue will point them out, and of course, the witnesses as over 10 people I know stood next to this guy as he pulled the trigger.
aids, it was all about the aids.
I was there. Saw one fight and the security responded quickly and efficiently.
However I went thru the metal detector with keys, phone, belt and nothing went off. I did get patted down tho.
I agree the vibe in the place was a bit nasty, but only in the stadning areas, the dancefloor was full of smiles.
I was there and it was a rough night - I saw at least 2 fights before the end of the night - badly organised - poor security - there were metal dectectors but they didnt seem to do much - I had a big bunch of keys in my pocket that disnt set it off.
Bad club, badly organised - should be shut down - it was a disgrace.
i was also there !
and the vibe if im honest was everyone tring to have a good time !! some did rush the bar push past people to get served etc but that happens everywhere you go!! was a good night up until the shooting!
HOW does someone get in and out of a night club nowers with a gun?????? answer?? please???
is the club gonna be shut down?
I was there. Everything was fine. It was the youth who had a bad vibe. Everyone else was having a good time, except for in one room where people were a lot younger, thats where the shooting happened.
