Sander van Doorn Interview
Before his much anticipated O2 Academy performance in Leeds on the 12th February, Digital Society caught up with headline act Dutch maestro and global dance star Sander van Doorn.
Hey Sander, Hope your well - first and foremost - where does DS find you today?
I am very well thankyou! Today I am in the studio, just taking a break from the tunes to catch up on some interviews.
How has the last 12 months been? It’s obviously been incredibly busy for you, are there any highlights that really stand out?
2009 really was a benchmark year for me. I’ve been touring all over the place and have some great memories to take with me. I think the biggest thing for me was being number 10 in the DJ Mag Top 100. But I’ve also had some great gigs including one weekend in November where I played at Sankeys in Manchester, Czech Republic & Belarus. Sankeys was absolutely off the scale – you northern kids really know how to throw a party!
Having performed pretty much all over the world, no doubt these experiences go beyond Dj-ing - which country stands out for you personally and why?
I rarely have a boring gig when I come to the UK and Ireland – particularly in the North of England, Scotland and inIreland where they are all absolutely bonkers! I have a really good fan base here and everyone seems to know a lot about music
The ‘Dusk Till Doorn’ concept events has proved a real success, which have taken place all over the globe from Ibiza, North America and here in the UK. What was the vision behind the concept??
With Dusk Till Doorn I wanted to create a night where people could come along for a clubbing experience as well as a great night out. Essentially the kind of night I would want to go out to, it’s just a great party with me as the host.
You have had numerous tracks and remixes over the years, including recent hit ‘Bastillon’ and the awesome ‘Ninety’. Along with collaborating with Marco V in the past, and remixing for the likes of Robbie Williams and the Killers - is there a particular production or piece of music that has made you really proud?
Riff was a tune that was really well received and played by everyone in the dance scene, rather than just Trance DJs. It opened so many doors for me and it still goes off everytime I play it. You know you’ve made a great tune when it still gets such a good reaction years later. The Sia remix I did of ‘The Girl You Lost To Cocaine’ also broke into DJs boxes of all different genres so that was great for me.
The success of Doorn Records is well known right throughout the dance scene, which producers do you feel contributed to this success and who are the next hot artists to keep an eye on in 2010?
Everyone who has had releases on Doorn has contributed to its success. I don’t feel I can pick anyone out as Doorn puts out different styles of dance music and is quite a versatile label. As far as 2010 goes – keep a look out for some big tunes. I can’t say anything yet as it’s all still getting locked down, but you won’t be disappointed.
Also tell us about the ‘Identity’ radio show, which is in its 4th year now?
Identity is great to do, currently we’re reaching an audience of 1.5m listeners per show through global FM, digital and internet radio stations I love it because I get to play everyone lots of fresh tunes from the comfort of my own studio! I am going to be bringing in some new features soon and we’re constantly adding new radio stations and reaching a wider audience so, look out world!
