What is house music to you?
House music means a lot to me. Apart from being eclectic when to comes music generally house music is what I work with on a day-to-day basis. From the age of 13 I have been listening to mix tapes from Carl Cox doing a Fantazia session to Tony De Vit and dreaming to be part of the music industry one day.
How important is a good knowledge of dance music history to any dj/producer do you think?
Quite important I think. I’m not saying if you were not around to see the start of the acid rave days you have to be clued up about it and know every artist that was around but I think you should definitely have a background of why you got into the scene in the first place and have a basic history of what you grew up on.
Do ever wonder if making everything from electro to tech to house to whatever you are spreading yourself too thinly?
No not at all. I think its good to change your style up and be creative. Everyday im in the studio writing lots of different genres, it helps with the job and stops it becoming mundane. I also create sound bites for adverts etc. and that involves being more musical so I try to transfer that over to some of my tracks when it fits.
What's been your biggest challenge this year?
I think stepping back and not doing as many gigs as I did the last two years. My producing was becoming effected by it. Taking time off this year has helped so much in that I feel my production has taking another step forward. I have lots of new tracks coming out in 2010 on Global Underground and 303 Lovers that I feel are so much better than the productions I was doing last year.
You work often with Toolroom - what's the labels ethos and outlook?
Its great to work with Toolroom because they are a very professional label. When it comes to their artists they look after you very well and always pay on time, which is a good thing especially in this industry. Another great thing with Toolroom is they are always thinking ahead of what’s the next style and finding himself or she involved in it one way or another.
I see you're on twitter - what do you make of the service?
I don’t use it and im cancelling my account. It drives me up the wall when you get a notification constantly with someone writing what they are doing every second of the day. “Imp in the airport lounge”, “I’m now putting on my shoes and going down the road” “Im am now having a shit”. I hate it.
To be honest I can think of far better things to do with my time then be Twittering.
What tune would you reach for - that you knew would smash it - if the dancefloor were lagging?
It really depends on where you are. Lot’s of tunes really for different crowds. Imp caning Thomas Bangalter “Colossus” at the moment near the end of my sets.
What can people expect from you at Filth?
I’ve been looking forward to this party for a few months now and it’s going to be so good. By the time comes round I will have my new tunes ready so imp looking forward to dropping them. Basically its going to be one hell of a party going onto the early hours so make sure you get your power nap in before you come out.
