Review: Slide @ Prince of Wales, Brixton with Dimitri from Paris

We sent Lola Mia Bellouere-Keay down to Brixton to witness the pairing up for two French disco destroyers The Reflex and the indomitable Dimitri from Paris at Slide.

We were fortunate to be blessed with yet another beautiful bank holiday here in London and deep in the heart of Brixton, at the Prince Of Wales, there was some funky vibes coming from the rooftop.

Up on the roof terrace, where we were later to be embraced with the presence of Dimitri From Paris and The Reflex (listen to his Skiddle mix below), the palm trees were swaying the wind, the bar armed with Pimms and Aperol cocktails - truly epitomising the feelings of summer in the eyes of this reviewer.

We couldn’t imagine a better way to be spending our Sunday, decked in the glorious sunshine and watching one of our childhood heroes take to the decks. Not even being probably the youngest there could dint the occasion, primarily due to everybody being there for the right reason; the music.

We arrived fairly early to check out the venue and watch the day develop, and as the day was in its infancy it was rather quiet to begin with, a slight surprise considering the sell out status. By 6pm, the venue had filled out and we were waiting for Dimitri amongst a crammed dancelfoor, part of the throng looking expectantly to the DJ booth.

Arriving a little late, dressed in tartan pants, a blazer and a scarf, he immediately got to work. Once he got spinning, and set up his little video camera in front of the decks, the party started, everyone had their house heads on dancing away under the sun with drinks in hand, and the sunglasses and shorts were out in full force.

The best gentleman we encountered was a bald dude inspired by David Bowie, who was in his element raving around rocking the spandex, he even had time for an outfit change by the side of the DJ booth.

Dimitri overplayed his set to the crowds delight, probably to make up the fact he started a little late, his encore songs further enabling the audience to get down, particularly a rousing rendition of Wild Cherry's evergreen 'Play that Funky Music'.

There was a great atmosphere in the air, everybody was smiling, and dancing around making new friends. The only fault laid with the fact the music could have been a lot louder, although noise restrictions due to the club being in a residential area are probably the reasoning for this.

As the night descended upon us, the masses migrated down to the club to really start the rave with Reflex , the beats were banging and some shapes were seriously being thrown. He took the night well into the early hours, peppering his sets with the edits with which he has become synonymous with.

Eventually we slipped off, having had our fun and seen two top DJ’s in action, firmly rewarded for our Sunday dalliances.

Fancy hitting up the next Slide? Their next show is on Saturday 26th July at Ministry of sound with Francois K, Greg Wilson, Ivan Smagghe and many more - further details here.
