Review: Groove Armada @ The WHP
12th Nov 2008
A chilling Halloween night began in Manchester with the expectation of a masterful performance from one of the best UK dance acts of the last twelve years. This was the night Groove Armada were to light up Store Street, home of the Warehouse Project, and boy oh boy did they put on a show. This night is sure to live long in the memory of the adrenalin craved ravers that were lucky enough to witness this one-off live set for 2008.
It all took a while to really get going with the doors opening as early as 9pm and Groove not due on stage until 1:30am. It allowed for the underground car park, once used as an air raid shelter, to fill to the brim with house fans that had flocked from all over the UK. With Krysko and Greg Lord keeping the crowd entertained I was taken back by the atmosphere that began to build around me. So many ecstatic faces decorated with aluminous paint surrounded me by the bar area as the main room began to fill.
Suddenly, what was once just exposed brickwork, dark corners, arches, and air vents that made up this sparse industrial space, had transformed into a warm, chaotic warehouse filled only with an electric atmosphere that was second to none. When the whole building fell into complete darkness the crowds dashed to the main room, knowing it was time for the biggest night Warehouse Project had staged so far in 2008. And believe me, nobody could have been disappointed by what was about to unfold.
The introduction could hardly be heard above the thousands of euphoric screams, as drinks and glow sticks were tossed into the air by the excited fans. Groove Armada certainly knew how to work this Manchester crowd, as everybody bounced up and down creating an incredible wave of raucous bodies. All the massive hits, such as I See You Baby' and Get Down', were played to a sound of great appreciation, but there was just one thing missing... And then it came...
Just when I thought I had seen everything that this night could produce, Groove raised the bar one last time and belted out arguably their best tune to date, Superstylin'. The crowd responded in magnificent fashion as these thousands of tired bodies found new life and threw themselves around the room once again. Witnessing Groove Armada put on an exceptional performance this crowd put on one of their very own.
In every sense this night was as big a success as it could have possible been. As the room started to clear with everybody looking drained, you could sense they would be willing to do it all over again if the opportunity came along. Things just do not get as exciting as this in Manchester.
