Mother's Day in London!

25th Feb 2010

So mother's day is just around the corner and with so much other stuff going on, you haven't had a chance to think about how you can thank her for all her love and support (even when you weren't on your best behaviour!). Don't leave it to the last minute and end up picking up a card at the nearest offie because you saw the disappointed look on her face when she realised you had forgotten... Mother's day is a great chance to spend a fun day with mum and give HER a treat for once. Here at Skiddle we have put together a selection of nice things to do this Mother's day in London  to ensure you both a lovely day to remember.

Say it with flowers

With spring slowly creeping towards us why not take your mum for a stroll in one of London fabulous parks? Kew Gardens is a great choice; covering 300 acres with over 30,000 species of plants there is plenty to look at and the evolution house with it's permanent exhibition telling the story of the development of plant life means you will learn something new while you are at it!

If you want something a little less full-on you could go for a wander in one of London's markets. Colombia Road Market in East London displays buckets full of every type, colour and shaped flower you can imagine so mum can choose her own perfect bouquet. The independent galleries in the area will give some variety and the antique shops selling things from pottery to funky hats and lampshades make it a perfect destination to spend mother's day in London.
Alternatively, the Alexandra Palace Farmer's market is another great choice. Not only will mums be instantly charmed by it's setting at the foot of the glorious Alexandra Palace but also by the general feel-good vibe and the friendly stallholders selling hot food, fresh produce and artisan goods.

For those of you with green fingered mums and a bit more cash to splash about (£70.00 per person) why not send your mum to a flower arranging workshop? Sweet Pea Floral Designs is hosting a set of classes at Candid Arts in Angel where she can learn the essential basics from selecting the perfect colour and how to keep her blooms fresh to more specialised techniques like the perfect hand tied bouquet or a stunning centre piece. All classes end with a brew and some cake giving her a chance to natter with other participants and exchange tips!

Treat-her at the theatre

The theatre is super option for a mother's day prezzie, its an excuse to glam up and with the great selection of shows on at the moment there is sure to be something to suit every type or mum this mother's day in London.

Billy Elliot the Musical on at the Victoria palace theatre with a heart-warming tale and a political backdrop its an electrifying show that will not only keep your mum happy but the whole family as well!

You could go for something more conventional but equally brilliant and get some tickets to see Les Misérables at the Queen´s theatre. The catchy songs, full and well kept voices of the singers and the spectacular sets will show you exactly why this is London's longest running West End show... all we can say is don't forget to keep your tissues handy for the end...

Why not have a good old giggle with your mum by watching Mamma Mia at the Prince of Wales Theatre. You might have seen the film but its not a patch on the real thing... join along with the singing without a care in the world...you won't be the only one!

But if you really want to laugh go to the Funny Women Showcase at Leicester Square Theatre with stand-up, sketch, character and musical comedy showcasing some of the best talent of 2009 and beyond it will be the funniest Mother's day in London ever!

Fashionista

If you have a trendy mum who is into fashion daaaahrling then you could send her to the Fashion Sewing: Reinvent your Wardrobe workshops at Cockpit arts in Holborn. Led by fashion designer Lena Santana she will learn to look at familiar garments with fresh eyes. Deconstruction, embellishment and transformation are goals so make sure she takes some old clothes with her (preferably not yours...!)

Or you could head down to Carnaby Street and indulge her love of clothing and celebrities at the Carnaby Street exhibition which celebrate 50 years of the stylish shopping district. At the centre of the Carnaby Street exhibition is a unique 3D time-line that shows the growth of the area and just how much it has changed. Visitors can see the most important characters, events and happenings that have shaped the area over time.

Something spicy could come in the form of The Empress on Leman Street offering delicious Indian dishes, or Yum Yum in Stoke Newington for some unpretentious but renowned Thai food.
