Manchester's Easter Weekend!

25th Feb 2010

On Friday, one of the biggest raves of the year takes place; Hospital Records team up with Metropolis to take over The Warehouse Project for a night. They’re bringing one seriously heavy line-up. If Drum & Bass and Dubstep is your thing; you need this in your life.

On the other end of Friday’s spectrum, rock legends; Bad Company are in town. Having gone platinum more times than you could count on two hands, the atmosphere will surely be electric inside the M.E.N. arena this Good Friday. The performance will truly blow you away, and if it doesn’t, the wind machines will.

Saturday is a little different; local boys Contort Yourself are bringing in heavy bass advocate; Rico Tubbs. The Cheap Thrills bad boy has been pushing sound systems to their limit for a little while now, and will do his best to test the Roadhouse and your ear drums alike. If you like big bass and dark clubs, this one’s all you.

Saturday also sees Sankeys, who are currently in the running for worlds best club being visited by New Yorkers; The Martinez Brothers. These guys bring a serious party, playing soulful house through to techno.  The Martinez bros have been making serious waves since they played their first club gig in 06, right now they’re only getting better. Go see them.

Now the other big Easter weekend option, the M.E.N. Arena plays host to the first heavyweight championship title fight in Britain for ten years when David Haye defends his WBA title against American John Ruiz. Haye will be backed by thousands under the roof of the arena, and if you could describe the atmosphere on Friday night as electric, this will be unmeasurable. Haye’s own trainer has stated that “Ruiz is a master of making great fighters look ordinary”, however Haye remains in high spirits leading up to the bout and in his own words is “looking to take him out in good style”. Should Haye emerge victorious, he will find himself in good stead to take on the Klitschko brothers.

Should you still be standing on Sunday, the Iconic Cocoon brand brings in the Mighty Dubfire back to Manchester at The Warehouse Project. Mighty is a strong word, not to be used loosely, but having picked up a multitude of awards over the years for his talents, mighty is a pretty good fit. If you know techno, you know Dubfire. Get your tickets for this one ASAP!

If you’re making the journey to the city and need somewhere to stay, you know Skiddle have your back! Have a look for some of the best rooms in the city....

Friday nights picks for the best rooms are the City Inn Hotel; located right next to Piccadilly Train Station, City Inn is a well priced 4* accommodation.  Guest will still enjoy a good night’s sleep while unaffected by the hustle and bustle outside. Another solid option is the Ramada, located in Piccadilly Gardens, you’ll be at most, 10 minutes walk from any part of the city centre, this recently renovated 3* is well priced, currently at £75 per room.

On Saturday prices are a little higher due to the boxing; however, the following are definitely worth a look. The Ramada again, currently one of the cheapest in the city compared to others. Ibis on Charles Street is another well priced option for the evening, and is ideal for an overnight. However, if your budget is a little higher, you could opt for The Midland Hotel, for only £30-£40 more than the rest of the market, you could stay in 4* luxury for the evening.

On Sunday evening you’ll find several well priced rooms of a good standard, with the Macdonald Hotel, a 4* and currently priced around the £70 mark. If you would prefer to stay in serviced apartments; The Place is the place to be (see what I did there?), these 4* apartments are in a great central location and come at a good price.
