Inspired
originally as a foot soldier of the original techno scene, Jack
delivers an insiders dance music travel journal, which sees him
re-invent the musical diversity and dynamism of his worldwide DJ sets.
From his Chicago house and Detroit techno roots through to the dubby
rhythms of Berlin soundscapes and Europe’s clubbing playgrounds, Jack
meshes the sounds of the last two decades with the current fix,
unravelling a potent cocktail of techno-flavoured house and beats.
“My
desire is manifold..I want to surprise people, to touch their souls and
make their bodies dance with the new album. It’s different
levels...from being quite laid-back when played quietly, to powering
the dancefloor when the volume is pumped up”.
“I propose new directions and unveil new dimensions to make listeners
dream about the future …. And of course, there’s always the
rhythm...”Jack De Marseille
Collaborating with long time friend and sound engineer, Sébastien Rexovice, France’s acid house pioneer as a leading house DJ, Jack De Marseille reaffirms his talent as a gifted producer with “Inner Visions”
stamping a classic-meets-now dance music imprint. Encompassing
shimmering house to techy tones, dubby ambience to minimal burn, its
warm and spacey deep house opening track “So Lovely” lays out Jack’s timeless “Inner Visions” stall. DJ 3000 has just remixed “So Lovely” and Jack is aiming to release several singles from this album with new mixes.
Resembling an inspired night out “Inner Visions”
starts out in simple uncomplicated fashion with an effective groove
that builds and builds as the basslines bounce and beats sequence and
slide until you find yourself back in the after hours. Unveiling
different potent layers with every musical turn, “Inner Visions” is an
unmissable emotional tech-fuelled journey.
Minimal electro snakin beats rasp on “Dubaminimology” laced with high pitched keys before rolling down the dubby freestyle bassline groove of “Echospace”. “Body And Mind”’s
techy minimal groove expands into a percussive and atmospheric keys
soundscape ahead of the strong beats kicking in and then making way for
the sexy urban tech bounce of “Voie Celeste”. Emotive, striking, hynotic, and with swathes of bouncy bass and tech-filled sounds “In The Dark Side”s insistent beats take the tempo up a notch as does “Energiser”. “Deep Inside”
harks back to the early original afro house days with its “Koro
Koro”-groove interspersed with some deep techy switches before signing
off with the French 80’s inspired electro vocoder-vocal of “Personal Feelings” which Jack did with Trisomie 21.
Originally inspired by the acid house explosion twenty years ago, Jack De Marseille
is one of France’s original DJ pioneers of electronic music and
celebrates his 20th Anniversary in the scene with this release;
contributing much to the emergence of the French techno scene, at of
the end of the 80s. He did for techno in the South of France what Laurent Garnier did
for it in Paris, and his DJ success saw him elected Best French DJ by
Coda Magazine, topping Trax Magazine the following year.
One of France’s major electronic DJ’s, Jack held a residency on Radio
FG for many years, and also on Switzerland’s Couleur 3 station. His
famous residency at Paris’ Rex Club has been going strong for 13 years now, and in 1992 Jack co-organised the two massive Atomix parties
in Marseilles. It’s the first time in France a rave party is
authorized, and the buzz around these parties, where Laurent Garnier
also plays, is so incredible, Jack is booked to play the huge
Transmusicales de Rennes festival. Since then Jack has appeared at many
of Europe’s major electronic musical festivals including France’s
Boréalis (Montpellier), Astropolis (Brest) La Fiesta des Suds and
Marsatac (Marseilles); Sonar in Barcelona (Spain), Dance Valley in
Amsterdam,(Netherlands), I Love Techno in Ghent (Belgium), Energy in
Switzerland, Mayday in Germany and Mexico; Nature One and Time Warp in
Germany, Sziget in Budapest, Creamfields festival in Buenos Aires
(Argentina), and Global Gathering in England.
He has also enjoyed some amazing club residencies and has also been
invited to DJ at some of the most prestigious clubs including The
Palace in Paris; Tresor and Berghain in Berlin; Space, Pacha, Amnésia
and Privilège in Ibiza; Fuse and Café d’ Anvers in Brussels; Roxy in
Prague: OTV in Zagreb; Club IT, Now and Wow and Club More in Holland;
Matis in Bologna; Rachdingue, Sala del Cel, Florida 135, Loft and Ku in
Spain; Ministry of Sound and Heaven in London; The Arches in Glasgow;
The Area in Montreal; Love E Club in San Paulo and Volar in Hong Kong.
In 1998 Jack spun at the Paris Techno Parade, to one and a half million festival goers and the following year the same group including Jack, host an event at the Centre Georges Pompidou.
These events have helped establish electronic music as an art form in
France and secure recognition from the authorities and media.
Jack’s talents have also been recognised by the fashion cognescenti and he has provided music for designers such as Jean-Paul Gaultier, Paco Rabane, and Agnes B protege, Élisabeth Rapetti. His “Angel Track” track was also adopted for the French theatrical performance of “Trainspotting”.
As a producer, Jack’s first single, “Submerge” in 1997 was signed to Ozone (the first label to sign The Hacker)
and in 2001 he launched his own label Wicked Music. The label has
showcased artists such as French tech band, Trisomie 21, EDP, David
Carretta and 2 Rare People, and 5 years ago he released his first album
“Free My Music” via Wagram. Solid sales and reputation ensured Jack travelled the world DJ-ing as well as fitting in remixes for the likes of Audio Bullys, The Advent, Anthony Rother, Slow Train, and P Diddy. Amazingly enough Jack has also found time to open his own Wax Record Store (1995-2003), and add numerous and diverse mix compilations to his musical arsenal. www.jackdemarseilledj.com
And to further express Jack’s “Inner Visions”, he enlisted French poet,
Aline Soler, to work on the album booklet writing powerful verses that
represent the musical rhythms in a concise style. Alongside is the
Russian artiste, Vika Prokopaviciute whose original cover artwork is
both figurative and abstract, styled and psychedelic, and again
representative of all the different forces at play within.
Inspirations:
after great DJ sets at clubs and then coming back to make a track;
travelling; old ghetto blaster; old mix tapes, cycles and texturesof
music; raves including UK parties like Spiral Tribe and the hedonism of
gay clubs,
Track Notes:
“SO LOVELY”
The opening track is a double faceted piece, expressing an intimate and
personal sensation, and its also hints at the Transmat label, which I
have a huge admiration for.
“SPIRITUAL LIFE”
is the housiest track on the album. I thought about a lot of places and
scenes whilst making it and I was clearly turned on to New York.
”DUBAMINIMALOGY” is the minimal aspect of this project, and my personal vision of this style.
“ECHOSPACE” is all in the title, and is an homage to this dub seed that I adore,
“BODY AND MIND”
refers to my way of creating music, bearing in mind the three points to
stimulate: feet to dance with, heart to feel with, and the head to
travel with. I can claim music for dancing of course, but it shouldn’t
elude the spiritual dimension.
“VOIE CELESTE”
is the piece of music that sticks best to the introspective idea on
which the album is based. There’s an aerial and mental energy, but also
a more physical power that emerges as soon as the volume is pushed up a
bit.
“IN THE DARK SIDE”
“ENERGIZER”
are 2 tributes, one to Chicago, the other to Detroit, and these
emotions and scenes brought me through time, shaping what I am today
and influencing my personality.
“DEEP INSIDE” returns to a calmer space with a dub-break atmosphere that brings things back to the inner self.
“PERSONAL FEELINGS”
is the story of an encounter with Trisomie 21, a previous collaborator
and this piece reminds me of what the infamous New York Limelight Club
must have been like
