Interview With The Bloody Beetroots!

24th Jun 2009

We’re delighted to welcome you to Get Loaded in the Park this summer where you’ll be DJing in the Dim Mak Stage alongside Felix Da Housecat, Crookers, Steve Aoki, The Count & Sinden and Junior Sanchez. Are you looking forward to the gig?

Yes, I’m really curious about it and can’t wait to be there.

Which other acts are you looking forward to catching at the festival?

Peaches and Rob da Bank, in particular.

Who would win in a tag team wrestling match, The Bloody Beetroots or Crookers?!

Neither as we’d never understand the rules of the game. You know, we’re Italian.

You’re DJ sets are rather legendary. You love it right?!

No, I hate it. I have to spin: it’s penitence for a wicked crime I committed when I was three years old.

Do you also play out live?

The Bloody Beetroots Live will be up and running for January 2010. But I will reveal no more…

Please introduce yourselves. The Bloody Beetroots is…

… my electro persona. The Bloody Beetroots Dj Set is me and my friend, Tommy Tea.

How did you first get together?

Tommy was the tour manager of my first punk band.

And how did you come up with the name?

Pure word architecture to optimize Google search results. Sounds good, no?

What’s the best part about being in a double act?

We support each other. In every sense.
r> And the worst?

After a curry, exchanging masks by mistake can be brutal…

Whose idea was the masks? What was the inspiration behind that?!

Italian Commedia dell’arte morphed into Spiderman

Are you comic book fans?

I am more than a fan. I grew up with one of the greatest illustrators alive, Tanino Liberatore. He changed how I saw comics and images in general, giving me that punk aftertaste that still lingers and gives my life its flavour.

Do you have lots of different masks for different occasions?!

No. It’s always the same.

It must get pretty hot in there no?!

No, we have hi-tech air-conditioned masks.

Your album ‘Cornelius’ was in the Top 100 International iTunes downloads - that’s very impressive! What are you working on at the moment?

I’ve just finished ‘Romb-o-rama’, the new Bloody Beetroots album, a project conceived with my idol Tanino Liberatore who designed the cover, among other things. I’ve also recorded some material for a new live Punk project called RIFOKI, produced by Giulio Favero, who produced The Melvins and Zu.

You work closely with Steve Aoki over at Dim Mak. How did you hook up with the label?

Steve reached out to me two years ago on Myspace and we’re like brothers now.

You toured the US together too right, how was that?

Sold out!!

2009 is already a big year for you guys with your ‘WARP’ EP feat. Aoki on vocals becoming a massive dance floor hit worldwide! Are you warped?!

Definitely.

Musically, what’s next from The Bloody Beetroots?

I’m working on a live set for The Bloody Beetroots with the Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti in Milan to bring a fresh message of electro-decadence  to the best stages around the world. Should be ready in 2010.

As a DJ/production outfit, you also have a rather recognisable ‘look’. Is fashion and style a big part of your lives?

I think so. But what I wear doesn’t depend on fashion so much as a constant exploration of myself based on what music I’m into. And that’s often very retro.

What was the most expensive item of clothing you’ve ever bought?

A Burberry trench coat. I am paying in instalments.

What’s rocking your world at the moment?

The Black Flag.

Have you got a busy summer touring?

Yes. I’ll be touring around Japan, Australia and Europe till September.

Which gig has been the most fun this year so far and why?

The Social Club in Paris is always a gas.

Is there anyone in particular you’d like to do collaboration with?

Yeah, a few of the old original punk rockers.

What inspires you?

Love and angst.
