Interview: Edu Imbernon

27th Aug 2010

Skiddle catches up with Space resident Edu Imbernon ahead of his gig at Filth (Mint Club, Leeds) on Sept 11th with Kaiserdisco.

Hi Edu! Can you introduce yourself to Skiddle's readers?

Hello! I’m Edu Imbernon, a Producer and DJ from Valencia, Spain, and I’m 21 years old. I have been producing since I was 18 and the last 2 years have been great for me.

And how did your Space Ibiza residency come about?

I think it came about thanks to my work in 2009 and 2010, the ‘El Baile Aleman’ worldwide hit (on Liebe*Detail) helped a lot, also, in Spain this year I won two deejaymags awards (‘Best Producer’ and ‘Most Sold Track’) which captured national attention for me.

What have you learnt from the residency?

Well, Ibiza is a great place to showcase yourself, that’s for sure. I played in different floors and with different set-times so sometimes I had to play deep and sometimes peak-time… this way I learnt a little bit more about my “warm up” sets as normally most of the sets I did this last year were peak-time, headline sets.

What are your top three current tunes?

Well there has been a lot of great tunes this Summer, but for me these current three are the best:

David August – Moving Day [DIYNAMIC]

Dixie Yure – By Defection [NORDIK NET RECORDS]

Oliver Koletzki & Fran – Arrow and Bow (Marek Hemmann remix) [STIL VOR TALENT]

How long do you spend looking for new music each week and where?

Good question! This Summer sometimes it has been really difficult to do this. However I always try to find one day a week to do this, maybe sometimes more. I always look over the promos I receive and also scour through Beatport for classic stuff.

What do you see as your role as DJ?

As a DJ I see my role to entertain the people who pay their own hard earned money to enter a club and have a good time and listen to great music. I feel a certain responsibility to make the people that come and see me leave the club with the best possible feeling from my music and DJ sets. I try to be very energetic when I DJ, in the same vein as when I’m producing. I play with Traktor and midi controllers, using all four channels of the mixer all the time.

And what influences the music you make most?

My feelings for everything, my friends, my family, my gigs, my travels…

How do you hook up with the labels you do to release music – who approaches who?

After releasing ‘El Baile Aleman’ alongside my friend Coyu on Liebe*Detail I begun to have a few requests from other cool labels, so, after that, hard work and everything else is paying off. I also just try to think of what kind of labels I would love to release for and just go for it!

What can people expect from your set at Filth?

Lots of infectious groove and a few emotional moments, for me, the perfect combination.

What else are you working on this year?

Well, I actually have lots of upcoming projects. I am just preparing the next Eklektisch (my own record label) release, after the 2nd vinyl release “Tarantula” (which was nº1 Beatport Top 100 for almost 7 weeks). I’m really looking forward to the release of my remix of The XX and their hit ‘Crystalised’ and also working on a compilation CD alongside my friends Uner and Coyu for the UK label CR2. Finally I am preparing my upcoming tours for South and North America and the next Asia tour. Looks set to be a nice year for me!
