Other Album and Single Reviews ...
Felix da Housecat – Radio
3rd Apr 2008
I’m one of those folk who really didn’t understand ‘Kittenz and thee glitx’ upon its release; let’s just say I see it more of the album that did the same for electroclash as Fatboy Slim’s ‘You’ve come a long way baby’ did for big beat.
Electroclash, like big beat, was a flash in the pan genre, and even though it may have been one of the catalysts for what seems like the zillion, generic, electro-house tunes in the past five years, that initial first wave of electroclash (Fisherspooner, Peaches, et al) have very much disappeared from the hype pages of trendy music magazines.
I’ve always wished Felix Da Housecat would recapture the greatness of his criminally overlooked ‘I know elektrikboy’ album, released under the guise of Thee Maddkatt Courtship; as its 80’s influences still managed to remain within the context of dancefloor orientated, house music, whereas his later releases have taken a more commercial feel.
This single, lifted from his latest album ‘Virgo Blacktro and the movie disco’, is yet more proof that my desire for the Felix Da Housecat of old to return isn’t going to happen any time soon.
‘Radio’, is simply influenced by 80’s electronic pop music; it drifts along pleasantly with its repetitive vocodered vocals and dreamlike synth arrangement, but that pleasantness becomes simply irritating after about fifteen seconds.
I’d
be quite interested to hear ‘Virgo Blacktro and the movie disco’ in its
entirety and I really hope ‘Radio’ is simply just a low point on the album.
