Edwyn Collins returns

9th Feb 2010

Edwyn Collins is preparing for the release of his first song since he suffered a stroke five years ago.

The 'A Girl Like You' singer was left barely able to talk, walk, read or write by the stroke in 2005, but has now recovered to the point where he is able to function as a musician again and his first track since the illness , 'I'm Feeling Lucky', will appear on an album in tribute to gospel singer Mavis Staples.

Edwyn said: "It's the first song after my stroke, it was difficult in a way but the lyrics are simple and direct.

"'I'm Feeling Lucky' is about positive music, it's inspirational in a way. It's a good song. My son did the lead guitar solo, He's called William and is 19, it's a great solo, an exciting solo and I like it."

Former Orange Juice frontman Edwyn is also working on a new solo album, collaborating with former Sex Pistols drummer Paul Cook.

He added to BBC 6 music: "It's coming slowly, my lyrics, 11 new songs, simple new songs. I'm getting there.

"One of the songs, has got Paul Cook on it. It's called 'I'm Losing Sleep' and it's kind of like Northern Soul crossed with punk.

"I'm really happy with the results. It's great, it's exciting, it's positive it's happening again once more."

The Mavis Album, which features 'I'm Feeling Lucky' as well as songs from a range of artists, including Cerys Matthews, Candi Staton, Ed Harcourt and Sarah Cracknell, is released on February 15.
