Defected in The House Zouk Out Singapore '10 - Review

Defected label boss,Simon Dumore, showcases more globetrotting mix antics with a little help from DJB...

Defected label boss, Simon Dunmore, is an intriguing character. There are not many out there whom can on one hand churn out consistently quality and credible releases, whilst on the other, form an instantly recognisable brand aimed at those less inclined to see house music as a lifestyle, and more of a weekend leisure activity. I guess it just means, Mr. Dunmore, is occasionally willing to put the integrity of the underground aside in order to be an extremely astute business man.

Those of us more on the purist side of things should still give this man the respect he deserves, as his sharp, commercial decisions have provided him with a platform to do some unbelievably amazing things for house music, like for example, resurrect two of its greatest labels, Strictly Rhythm and Junior Boys Own.

Shifting physical copies of mix compilations in this 'get everything for free' age of internet downloading must be a nightmare, but Zouk Out Singapore goes a little further than simply showcasing the DJ talents of Dumore and DJB. This artfully packaged compilation comes with a Guide To Singapore booklet for anybody venturing their way across that part of Asia for a bit of a rave up. We have the likes of Sandy Rivera, Sasha, Osunlade, DJ Spen, Paul Oakenfold and Paul Van Dyk telling us, Zouk in Singapore is one of the best clubs in the world, apparently.

Dunmores mix starts off with quality house from the likes of Blaze, Marc Evans and Sandy Rivera, before veering off into more mainroom territories with tracks and remixes from the likes of Erick Morillo, ATFC, Michael Gray and Harry Choo Choo Romero.

DJB does his thing for those with more discerning tastes; as, aside from Daniel Bovie & Roy Roxs awful, almost trance like, meandering remix of the South Street Player classic (Who?) Keeps Changing You Mind, it offers nothing more than a journey into true house music.

With output from both Strictly Rhythm and Junior Boys Own getting an airing throughout the mixes, I can see this mix appealing to both house music veterans and newcomers alike.

All in all, another Defected release straddling the line between underground cool and money grabbing commercialism, but as the focus seems to be fixed on simply having a good time, I can't really argue.
