Circus at Nation, Liverpool 02/05 win Tickets

28th Mar 2008

What the $@%£? It’s a bad call to use expletives within writing, but sometimes there’s no other alternative. That’s pretty much the reaction when faced with pupil-dilating latest effort from Circus, a simply stunning selection of talent that really does causing the jaw to drop fully to the floor. A first return to the hallowed Nation venue since the massive sell-out Fifth Birthday, coupled with a line-up which would have made the previous tenants Cream proud is something which is, quite simply, nothing short of sensational.

Top of this behemoth oak tree is none other than arguably the most iconic of DJs, Carl Cox. Rave’s most likeable hero, Carl has been wowing clubbers with his supreme deck talents, innate crowd rocking ability and huge infectious grin for over 25 years. A career that has spanned acid house, hardcore, techno and beyond, calling in at a variety of global destinations along the way and maintaining a huge pedigree. The first to really showcase music over three decks, Cox is an enigmatic hero to many and a standard bearer for all. Cox’s appearances at Nation were always enormous, lengthy sets both for Bugged Out! and Cream in their heyday and after a scintillating performance for Circus at the Barfly a few years back, a mouth-watering return has been too long.

Then there’s the man like, the one and only Sasha. Like Cox, here is a figure revered by legions of fans across the globe, a doyen whose effusively emotive sets blend trippy atmospherics, nail edged techno grooves and swooning breakdowns to dazzling effect. This is someone who has the ability to make grown men cry on the dancefloor, a figure so blessed with ability to weld music to raw emotional feeling that he has become symbolic of dance music’s ability to transport clubbers to far across land. If Euphoria could ever be distilled in potion form, surely Sasha would be the one who crafted the recipe; such is his amazing ability to work floors. Returning to the scene of some of his most dynamic gigs where he was literally held as a God at Cream’s world dominating peak, this is the stuff of legend for Liverpool clubbers.

The presence of both these legends is enough to ensure a sell-out, but as has come to be expected of Circus by now, they don’t do things by half. Joining these two veritable tyrants of the rave is a merry band of superheroes of the deck discipline. Yousef, Circus’ musical lynchpin and co-promoter stars, once again making an emotional return to the scene of his career’s initial inception. Also playing is Deep Dish’s techno warlord Dubfire, a man firmly on top of his game and revelling in a new career direction that has seen him earmarked as one of the leading players on the modern scene.

Further techno heavyweight action comes in the form of Swedish baron Adam Beyer, who like Dubfire has recently gone through his own resurgence with a sweltering catalogue of storming club productions and DJ sets. Maidstone house hero Nic Fanciuilli is attendance, bringing his unique tech funk to the forefront, as is Germany’s regal techno kingpin Stephan Bodzin, showcasing his expansive shimmering electronica. Circus residents Lewis Boardman and Alex Wolfenden make up some staggering support.
