Chibuku Shake Shake the Barfly, Saturday 4th October
29th Sep 2008
Chibuku hits into October straight off with a trademark party of fervour. As per usual it’s an eclectic blast of hedonism which deviates between a variety of music, this time weaving together crunchy electro and drum n bass to kick start October.
Top is Erol Alkan, a Chibuku favourite and an international superstar in the modern era of Djing. Musically he has proved his worth, whether providing the board work for indie starlets the Mystery Jets, fine tuning Digitalism and Alter or contributing panoramic balearica as part of the Wizard’s Sleeve, Alkan has versatility in abundance. There are few djs who bring such craft to the decks and he is arguably one of the most revered regular Chibuku guests around.
Support for Alkan comes in the shape of a live show from Irish Electro demons the Japanese Popstars and the Ritous Rockers. From relative obscurity to being hailed as the answer to music ill’s, the Japanese trio have garnered huge responses across the board with their debut album and their music is likened to “sky-skimming, stadium-sized techno built to make an entire field of ravers jump in unison." The Rockers are incendiary fire starters who’ve drawn their own style of djing out of the electro sphere, drawing comparisons to the party techno of Boys Noize as well as that of Alkan and gaining gigs at premier parties like Wax:On and Bugged Out!
The other facet of the line-up sees a typically strong drum n bass selection. Jungle legend DJ Hype, the figurehead of Ganja Kru and Tru Playaz, brings his famed scratch heavy template back to Chibuku. He’s joined by Friction, a man whose bone crushing ideologies on the way drum n bass should be viewed have signified him as both a producer and DJ with the requisite clout to get imperially heavy upon clubbers. Liverpool and Chibuku’s own production whizkid Futurebound makes for an emphatic support, with the vocals of MC SAS and MC iC-3 ensuring the chatter is at its finest.
Chibuku’s resident don Dom Chung makes a welcome trip north from his London base for some all night action in The Bar.
