Block Party - The Attractions

With the 3rd of October fast approaching, students from around the country are preparing to unite and, in their masses, descend on Birmingham for the one night only extravaganza that is Block Party.

Date published: 23rd Sep 2009

With 15 different arenas to cram in 10,000 students, entertainment will be provided by the likes of Hadouken, Tinchy Stryder, Mystery Jets, The Wombats and Valve Soundsystem with plenty more acts to thicken out the bill. If you need a rest from the music though there will also be a whole host of alternative attractions to keep you entertained. Here’s our rundown of five of the top attractions at Block Party 2009.

The Headphone Disco

If you’ve never been to a headphone disco before then Silent Noize is the ideal chance to try one out. Although the idea of silently dancing to someone else’s Ipod may not sound like the ideal way to spend your night, somehow, when you’ve cranked up the volume on your headphones, it just seems to work. Take them off to listen to the united crowd singing along without any music and experience the joy of being able to order a drink without having to scream your intestines out at the bar staff. Also with up to three channels each controlled by a different DJ, if a song comes on that you don’t like then you can simply switch over to something better or, if the other channels don’t do anything for you either, turn it off and imagine you’re listening to something better. Just try not to think about the fact that literally every other person in the room could be listening to the opposite channel to you, silently mocking you...

Foam Party

We’ve all been there, you’re on a night out, drink in hand dancing to one of your favourite songs and you’re thinking this would be perfect but for one thing, there’s a distinct lack of foam. Well here’s the answer to that little problem! The foam party will be held in Rootys Marquee and you can experience a night like no other as the foam cannons fill up the dance floor with over five feet of foam. Not only is it incredibly fun but it also manages to somehow keep you warm! You can even bring along your swimming gear if you want an excuse to get your body out or a wet suit if you don’t fancy getting soaked.

Rockyoke

Despite the name sounding like the next generation of virtual Japanese pets, this is actually a unique and hugely entertaining form of karaoke. Dirty Weekend are a band who belt out the songs live but leave the vocal work up to you. Sign up, pick a song and take to the stage fronting a real live band who will play whatever you request. With over 200 songs in the band’s repertoire, you should have no trouble finding a song to take to the stage with. Great entertainment even if you’re just watching and who knows, this could be the big break you’ve been looking for!

Digital Funfair

The funfair is here but this is no ordinary funfair. Inside you can throw balls at a TV in the virtual coconut shy, cycle through a game of Pacman in Pacbike or create music with the Beat Jigsaw. With a load of other electronic attractions also on offer, this funfair reinvents and modernises traditional games to bring them up to date and is a unique way to enjoy all the fun of the fair. It has been touring the country this summer visiting everywhere from Glastonbury to London’s Science Museum so don’t miss it when it rolls into Birmingham for one night only!

Skate Show

Monster (that energy drink with the green claw lines) will be bringing along a skate and BMX show for those of you who like to get the adrenaline flowing. With the best of British talent showing off their skills and tricks you can safely marvel at them from a distance or, if you fancy having a go, you will be able to take to the ramps and show everyone what you’ve got. Probably best to leave it to the pros if you’ve already started drinking though!
