Finally, the much anticipated release of Mega Mega Mega has come. It seems like forever since we heard the first release from the album, and since I for one wasn’t sure what was happening with the album back then, so I’m happy it’s finally out. Neither of these two gents are new to the UK club scene - they’ve both been about doing their thing for a while now, and doing pretty well with it. You can regularly find their names being mentioned on several of the big alternative radio shows by the like of Annie Mac and Zane Lowe.
On my first listen, I was actually quite disappointed. Partly because I felt like it should have been released a while ago. It also seemed to lack a banger or two; you know, those tracks which you just lose it to, or get lost in. I was also hoping for a sneaky dubstep track in there, given its current popularity, but to no avail.
Now don’t let that put you off, as the more I’ve had this playing, the more it’s grown on me. The sound of the album isn’t current, it’s ahead of time. House music had taken a backseat in a way during the last year (I’m talking cool house, not deep house or anything like that) to dubstep, the upsurge in grime and other ‘urban’ music, but it’s about to come full circle on a national scale, and with that, I’m presuming that’s why it’s taken a while for this album to come out.
With no intro, the album breaks straight into ‘Do You Really Want It’ ft. Trackademiks; it’s not bad, it immediately bears similarity (in my eyes) to Skream's ‘8-bit baby’, which features Murs. From there it goes into what is the most commercially minded track on the album, which features the Mystery Jets - it’s a nice Summer track.
The big hitters for me are 'Elephant 1234', which would do damage in the rave, as would 'Mega'. My favourite track on the album is 'Addicted To You', featuring Bashy. I also really like 'Hold me' with Katy B, which has a real nice vibe to it with a tropical sound. The melody inspires happiness, kind of.
