Four weeks in and the talent is really starting to hot up, with a selection that start to really throw up delights in terms of pure club line-ups. And in that respect we mean when the talent really serves to find one particular clubber, one particular sense of musical nous, and really full on deliver exactly what they’re after.

These are the kind of line-ups that make fans of a particular style of music sit up and take notice across the country, the kind of programming that brings in the masses from around the nation.

The Friday sees legendary Mancunian rugged beats impresarios Ape in session, and boy do they showcase some style. The name of the game here is breakbeats in all its glory and tempos, from the groove heavy shizzel floating in hip-hop straight through to the fury of drum n bass. Andy C is top of the tree, bringing his searing selection of boom up to the foreground with another one of his searing workouts. He’s joined by the Nightmares on Wax Soundystem in full effect, DJ E.A.S.E, Ricky Ranking, Chyna B and Ella May all stepping up to splice the hip-hop, neo-soul and fluttering breaks together. There’s a hot-bed of local talent also waiting in the wings to deliver a sterling assessment of Ape’s kalediscopic musical reach.

And then onto Saturday, when things get really, really intense as Techno hogs the limelight. Sequence come to 112-116 to celebrate their 4th birthday and they are coming armed to the veritable teeth to rock Princess Street to its foundations. Headlining this journey through brutality is British techno’s shining light, the one and only Surgeon. No other can combine the sheer intensity of techno at its blistering, hardcore best alongside the finer moments of dance quite like this lightning fast DJ, known to splice obscure acid house gems as readily as the drum led barbaric slayers he’s pioneered. He’s joined by minimalism’s founding father Robert Hood, his live show demonstrating the bleak vision of Detroit’s musical manifestations. Further live appearances from Clark, Redshape and Andy Stoot show techno in its most uncompromising fashion, and crafting a sonic tour de force rarely seen in one club. The sound of the future, this is dance music at its most disturbing.
