The mayor of Southwark, Councillor Sunil Chopra, opened the market on Sunday 7 December alongside East Street market at Nursery Row Park, SE17.

Plaza Latina is a three-day Christmas market that's the first of its kind in the UK. Visitors enjoyed an array of performances from Bolivian artists on its first day, along with a special ballet presentation by world-class dancer, Fernando Montaño, with fellow Colombian opera singer Alejandro López Montoya and pianist Mauricio Javier Barra, from Argentina.

Councillor Chopra, said: "Plaza Latina brings a wonderful new Christmas experience to Southwark. There is so much to see and do, I hope everyone will come along and enjoy all the Latin American festivities it has to offer."

Councillor Ian Wingfield, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Communities, Employment and Business said: "Southwark has one of the largest Latin American communities in the country and I am delighted that this event showcases the uniqueness of their culture. We were the first council to officially recognise its Latin American community and now we are the pioneers to this fantastic Christmas event that celebrates their traditions for everyone to enjoy."

There's still a chance for you and your family to get in on the Latin action as Plaza Latina is open again this Sunday 14 and Sunday 21 December. From 12pm until 6pm, come and celebrate Christmas Latin style with dancing, traditional music and tasty food.

Visit the mini stall village and find beautiful, interesting and unique hand crafted gifts. You can also try traditional dishes representing a variety of Latin American destinations from El Salvador to Colombia and Ecuador to Brazil to name a few.

Enjoy a hot rum punch as you amble up the Latino Christmas Village that leads to the Latin American themed marquee, where visitors of all ages can enjoy music, dance and festive traditions from Mexican Mariachis to Chilean folk dancing.

There are also a number of workshops for you and the family to join including dance, theatre and music, plus your chance to make your own piñata.

This event is funded by Southwark Council's High Street Challenge, Delancey and Lend Lease.

Plaza Latina takes place again this Sunday at Nursery Row Park (by East Street, Southwark) SE17 1AL on this Sunday 14 and Sunday 21 December 2014. Please visit http://www.plazalatina.co.uk/ for updates or follow @PlazaLatina on Twitter.
