Shuffle Live (Sheffield) - 08/03
29th Feb 2008
It’s another stellar line-up for the
Plug Bods. Week after week they’ve managed to balance the local with the
national, showcasing not only the finest musicians and artist making Sheffield
and the rest of Yorkshire pop their eyes out in disbelief, but also the nation
as well. This month there’s some sharp and focused wry song writing, youthful
dancefloor abandon, and rousing anthem belting from a glittering cast of future
heroes and stars in the making.
Top of the tree are London
sensations XXTeens. Signed to legendary label Mute recordings, the group have
already caused one hell of a stir with their moving music. Zane Lowe and XFM’s
Jon Kennedy are already certified members of the fan club, the latter
proclaiming his delight that ‘the boys wry humour hasn’t been lost as they get
increasingly embraced by the mainstream’. That comment came as an enthusiastic
eulogy to latest single ‘How to reduce the Chance of being a Terror Victim’,
which following on from the successes of ‘Onkarawa’ and ‘Darlin’ looks set to
continue their rapid rising trajectory to the top of the music business tree. www.myspace.com/xxteens
Following on are the equally revered
Cazals, whose hotter than hot star has seen them ink a deal with cooler than
thou label Kitsune, featuring recently on their bang up to date compilation.
Their devilishly fun synth pop is the stuff of dreams, bubblegum melodies awash
with stabby electro musings with a swooning vocal arrangement to make girls
scream. Teenage Kicks for the Computer age, it’s little wonder that they’ve
already garnered praise form all the right places, and that NME’s Hamish McBain
has dubbed them "Just one of the most forward thinking British
guitar bands today". www.myspace.com/cazalsuk
The final act are local heroes
North of Watford, whose band name takes a cunning pun to their preponderance of
operating within the Northern sphere of Britain. Only active for four months,
already the group have secured a burgeoning fan base on account of their
wide-ranging songs, pining about love melancholically just as rapidly as
they stomp their feet and whip up the floor. www.myspace.com/northofwatford
