Reflective Goes Twice Monthly @ Plug

4th Apr 2008

It’s a hugely important step for the long-running night which has been at the fore of a lesser-known scene, one which has arguably flown the flag as high and for as long as possible, always seeking to expand, develop and stretch the boundaries of bassline house.

Perhaps a little misunderstood, the mix of speed garage, 4x4 garage and R+B creates a heady cocktail of rip snorting shuddering – well – bass, and earlobe shredding music which reverberates through everyone on the dance floor, which has been a northern enclave since firing up in Sheffield back in 2002. It was promoter Martin Leverton who claims – rightly! – to first coining the phrase bassline house in an interview with i-DJ Magazine years ago, and the monicker stuck like glue. And really, there’s nothing more appropriate really, as for anyone who has been to a Reflective night, they can bank on one thing – plenty of house.

“It’s been a great adventure so far for us and the time feels right to expand a bit in terms of how many nights we put on,” Martin explains. “Part of it has been from consistently pulling in around 800-1000 people for each Reflective which is great, and we think there’s enough variety in terms of live acts and DJs that we can balance to ensure people keep coming back for more. So I spoke with the guys at Plug and we agreed we could step it up to twice a month!

“What’s really important to us is showcasing and nurturing new talent as there’s plenty out there, we know there is, it’s just some people need a bit of coaxing to come out. We are hoping to set up a comp for someone to play the main room, quite possibly for the birthday in August, and if that goes well then it could lead to regular gigs with us. We’ve got some great residents and there are plenty of cracking guests who come to us on a regular basis, so the comp will ideally give someone out there a chance. There’s also the label too which is going really well. It’s where loads of good music is emanating from and we can showcase all the new tracks at each gig too, so it’s perfect to see the crowd’s reaction, and people usually go a bit crazy. Tek, GBH and Veteran are all prolific producers. All’s we want to do is help spread bassline out to the UK – we think of ourselves as the home of bassline house but there’s no reason why a lot more people can get involved.”

Also keep eyes peeled for a special comp to win a set at Reflective’s birthday party in August. Info will be released very soon…   So now twice a month on Fridays at Plug there’s never been a better time to check out Reflective and what bassline house is all about.
