Forgotten Valley Forgets It's Cancelled
31st Mar 2008
Who's forgot about Forgotten Valley?
It was hyped as Cumbria's answer to the festival world. The Forgotten Valley festival was set to host a list of top acts the length of your arm in a field outside Kendal. Set across 3 days it offered a mix of indie and dance in a family friendly boutique environment. Sounds too good to be true? Apparently so.
Over the last week rumours are rife about the cancellation of The Forgotten Valley festival. As an official ticket outlet, skiddle.com was instructed to take tickets off sale last week for the event, with 'more details to follow'. Since this instruction, we have been unable to contact the promoter, or any of the team that were working on the festival.
As it stands the official website www.forgottenvalley.co.uk has no news with the full lineup still in place. Social networking sites setup to promote the event are strife with rumours, but no official news or statement.
A post from 'Cumbria Live' suggests that the event is officially cancelled and the ticket outlets should be contacted for a refund' however as a ticket outlet ourselves, until we have had official word to refund tickets we are unable to do so - and I imagine most ticket outlets operate in the same fashion.

So how can a festival that appeared with such a storm and a flurry dissapear off with a whimper? The press agencies that were working with the festival are also instructed to stop working on the festival, which in turn means that they will stop publishing news or updates about the event - including no doubt updates to websites and social networks.
Our many years in the industry have taught us that yes, events do fail, many do not get off the ground - it's not as simple as booking some bands and selling some tickets. We ourself at Skiddle have cancelled events before, or indeed just dreamt about getting one off the ground. Many of our events have succeeded and we have reaped the benefits, but through the good and the bad one thing we have learnt is that the customer, the event goer comes first.
If for whatever reason your event is not going to happen, let's not sit and wait for everyone to find out via speculation, this only damages the industry as a whole. Publish an open statement which details whats happened, why it's happened and more importantly how the ticket buying public can claim their money back. That way, if you choose to put on future events, at least your customers may be tempted back to your event.
Leaving people hanging is simply not good enough, regardless of your lineup and what you thought you could achieve.
