Liverpool voted 'most musical city in England'

18th Jun 2008

Liverpool has been voted the most musical city in England, ahead of rivals such as Manchester and London.

The home of The Beatles, The Zutons and Atomic Kitten - which is also currently European Capital of Culture - came top in a poll set up by the Arts Council in a national campaign.

Liverpool took 49 per cent of the online vote, with Sheffield - which gave the world Arctic Monkeys, Gatecrasher, Pulp and Def Leppard - came second, ahead of Lancashire rivals Manchester.

Leicester and Birmingham finished fourth and fifth respectively.

Gordon Ross, music coordinator for the Liverpool Culture Company, said: "Liverpool's music scene is renowned the world over – this award is great news for the city and should serve to encourage those seeking to build on that legacy."

Meanwhile, music lovers in the Yorkshire city were praised by the Arts Council for their attitude and passion for gigs in Sheffield.
