Five for the Funk: Yousef presents Circus

We're starting a brand new weekly feature called Five for the Funk, the first one lending it's gaze towards Yousef's epochal Circus showcase in Liverpool's East Village Arts Club on Saturday 26th July.

Brand new feature for all you lovely Skiddle readers out there called Five for the Funk. Each Wednesday we'll pick one of the many events on sale with us and give you five tit-bits of information related to it, and we're starting off with Yousef presents Circus at the East Village Arts Club this Saturday (26th July).

The reason for picking the tracks will shift each week, but for the inaugural version we've simply gone for five things to look out for this weekend if you make your way to Circus.

DISCLAIMER - we're not Nostradamus so if any of these things for some reason don't happen please don't go all Moe Szyslak on us with your pitchfork outside our office. Unless you have cake.

Dixon in East Village Arts Club

Innervisions' supremo Dixon is one of the biggest DJs on the planet, a supremely gifted selector who has wowed crowds across the planet with his vision of soul drenched house and techno, He's played Liverpool twice before, unfathomably in the Hold of the Shipping Forecast for the sadly departed Coco de Mer and also for Freeze in September 2013, but this is his first bite of the cherry at the city's clubbing centrepiece.

Whether holding court in the theatre or the loft he's bound to be memorable, and we'd guess that his joyous rework of Joy Wellboy's 'Before the Sunrise' (above) might make an appearance. Achingly beautiful dance music.

Green Velvet playing 'Flash'

You can never really predict what a DJ will play, but Green Velvet tends to revert to his calling card 'Flash' quite a lot, and the reason is because quite simply it's brilliant (as is he - check our recent piece on him).

A glorious tribute to the crescending drums of Richie Hawtin's 'Spastik', there's few techno records ever created as good and, as the video from Tomorrowland 2012 above shows, even better when accompanied by that unmistakable delivery live.

As a side note Danny Tenaglia's Nitrous Oxide remix of the track is one of the biggest records in the history of Circus and a consistent favourite of Yousef.

Yousef working his magic in The Theatre

One artist is truly synonymous with Circus, founder Yousef. After ruling the roost since the club's inception nearly 12 years ago, it's hardly surprising that he knows the Circus crowds and the venue like the back of his hand.

His ability to take new musical developments and trends and make them unique to him has made him one of the most relevant DJs around, and no one, we repeat no one, makes them move in the theatre like he does.

His recent release 'Analogue Times' (above) on Desolat with Blakkat showcases the sheer power behind his production skills, it's a killer track that we're hoping to hear on the 26th.

Tom Trago's Circus debut

Each month Circus deliver a debut, and this time round it's in the shape of Dutch DJ and producer Tom Trago. Trago has adopted a unique style that is laced with elements of disco, Detroit techno and synth funk.

After spending years and years immersed in music and focused on his goal, his irrefutable hard work paid off and he's now internationally renowned and praised.

His track 'True Friends' has all the components to make the Circus crowd go crazy. It was released last year on Rush Hour Records as part of The Light Fantastic album.

Spot the Wasted Heroes t-shirt

Wasted Heroes has been heavily associated with Circus for years. The man behind the brand, Russell Reid, has not only designed t-shirts for the club night (everyone is familiar with that 'Bigger Than Prince' tee) but he's also worked to create some of Circus' most memorable flyers and extra merchandise.

Yousef is more often than not sporting a Wasted Heroes tee and it's not unusual to spy a few in the crowd, so keep your eyes peeled for some of Russell's unique designs
