I have been to the riots in Leeds and the Wickerman to me once agian seemed like a beautiful lucid dream as I was floating on a pea green sea talking with all in front of me. We have to be very careful as well as it seems that we are finding it far to easy to label what appears to be a growing underclass. And first we label them then we talk of ways of excluding them wereas really what we hsould be thinking about is how can they get in the same happy grove as the rest of us. Like it or not these people we look at and say they are a Ned are as much Wicker people as everyone of us as the festival gets bigger and more diverse there will be more folk we don't like turn up, but as long as they don't threaten kids and do such things as said here then live and let live? |

I can honestly say - I thought the 'neds' would have caused some trouble or gave some abuse to me and my colleagues, but I can honestly say - I never had any trouble at all. Maybe that's because if they gave me the slightest bit of hassle they would have been removed from the entire grounds with immediate effect! ;) Cheers xx |

We were camped very close to the acoustic Tent and had no problems except for one night when a "Ned" joined us for a beer and a song etc. Like true Wicker-folk we invited him in, regardless of his tracksuit and Nike Trainers. He joined and evebn added Buckfast Wine to our libations to boot. Then however, he turned really nasty and started to try and fight everyone in our crowd. I went to bed, very stoned and very drunk. When I woke, I found that he had been tied to a chair and smeared with chocolate biscuits. He had food-stuffs sticking out of nearly every orifice and looked absolutely hillarious, although complaining of being blind for about 30 minutes. Glad to say we did not see him again :) I do not condone these acvtions but if anyone deserved to be humiliated it was this idiot and it seems a few others |

And first we label them then we talk of ways of excluding them wereas really what we hsould be thinking about is how can they get in the same happy grove as the rest of us. That's a lovely sentiment, and I for one wish it was that easy and that all people were as nice as the 99% of Wicker Folk. However, the reality is slightly harsher and folk are, rightly, fed-up with being excluded from having a good time by those who think only of themselves. This dis-respect for others intrudes into our daily lives. Going to a festival is a way to chill and relax, and to try and get away from it. *They* ruin it for everyone. They are not always disadvantaged. I live in a nice area in a nice village, across the road from neds who make our lives a misery. Their father works on the oil rigs and is not short of a few bob. They live in a nice house. They have all the advantages of life. It doesn't matter. They are spoiled, rude and selfish. So are the neds who go to festivals. If you can pay £50+ for a festival, for entertainment, you are *not* disadvantaged. No dig at you Iron Weasel. I'm just tired of making excuses for bad behaviour. |

But don't blame the psy tents most of the real people that enjoy psy are hippies and extremely friendly and unoffensive people and if they float around it's cause they're trippng and won't hurt a fly, if blame is to be place anywhere try the security or lack of it on camp sites, or the tent near the psy tent that played DnB and breaks thats were all the roundy lot will hang out wired on cocaine, speed and vodka!!! Why not put all these things down to experience, maybe talk to organisers about it etc... Oh and finally peace to you all and have a good rest of your summer.:approve: |

![]() Sound Offline Points:5 Posts: 7 | Re: Night Of The Living Ned... There were definitely more neds there than last year. I thought with the festival being so far out of the way it would put them off, but unfortunately not. Last year, I only saw two that I remember: Ned 1: "Moan we'll munch reez pills en git pure mad wi it man. Fockin brillyint" Ned 2: "Ho you, shut it, there's weans aboot" Ned 1: "Awrite man, chill e' beans" I agree that we shouldn't let them outnumber us. At the same time as agreeing that it's dangerous to stigmatise an entire group. Take people as you find them, and if they're out of order, tie them to a chair and cover them in chocolate biscuits (nice one G.Reg!). I hope the festival grows in the spirit of peace, and isn't overrun. By the way, the transport to get home was atrocious. The bus companies were taking £25 to get you one-way to Dumfries, capitalising on the fact there was no official transport set up. And the Happy Bus was apparently cancelled on the Friday from Glasgow. |

![]() karlytown Offline Points:84 Posts: 193 | Re: Night Of The Living Ned... Just been reading this thread and am truley shocked at the number of people who had bad experiences at the hand s of the "Neds" (Never heard this before ? is it the same as Chav's ?) Particularly feel sympathy for the guy who's children were threatened, and saddened that no action was taken. If someone threatend my kids they'd be in for a pasting, what would happen then ? Would I get kicked out of the festival for being negative ? Zero tolerance it says on the website, and that's what it should mean. We camped in that part last year, and it was OK, the only complaints being a bit of swaering and general high spirits, but it really seems this year that there were two festivals going on. I'm so glad we took the trouble to hump all our gear (Tent 60 Kilos) all the way up to the family camping area. I complained elsewhere about the haphazard policy on vehicles onsite, and I was particulalry dissmayed by the rubbish situation ( In the Family area I would have expected people to be more green minded.) Other than that though it was a joy, and as pointed out, at least there was generally someone around to keep the burglers away. It also makes me feel leess of a plonker about the fact that I carry so much stuff around with me.Even if I do look like an extra from Ray Mears Bushcraft. I say again I'm truly saddenned to hear people have been troubled in such a way as this, and Mainstage line-up considerred, I'm seriously re-thinking next year. I hope some of the intelligent suggestions (Towers. P.A. Plain clothes etc get taken on -board for next year. :dissappoi |

![]() misschief66 Offline Points:56 Posts: 13 | Re: Night Of The Living Ned... this was our first wickerman festival, and it was brilliant. don`t get me wrong, i`ve seen loads of better bands at other festivals, but for the general atmosphere and good time we had, it was the best festival i`ve ever been to and i`ll definately be coming back next year. i`m sickened to hear about everyone who had things stolen, we were lucky to have great neighbours in the campervan area and saw no sign of thievery or trouble. surely someone should invent a tent alarm.....like a personal attack alarm, really high pitched. that would scare the shit out of anyone sneaking in someone`s tent. mmm...now there`s a million dollar idea!! and can i just say, i`m 40 years old, i came with my best friends 2 sons (both 17 yr olds), they`re tracksuit wearing, baseball cap wearing lovely people. they kept our campsite immaculate, got on brilliantly with the neighbours and were a pleasure to be with. if i didn`t know them, i`d have to say i`d see them as `neds` or `chavs`, but i do know them, and they`re great lads. you can`t always judge a book by it`s cover. as for the toilets - i`ve seen loads worse and was expecting loads worse! leeds last year was a shitty nightmare! friend of mine actually had a shit in a bin bag in his tent rather than go to those toilets. haha. all in all, i was very impressed with the wickerman, i`m just annoyed i haven`t been there the last 4 years! cheers :-) |

Most of the people I go to the WM with each year proper love all the dance tents as well as a little chemical enhancement and they aren't neds Think the way forward would be to adopt the old glasto motto of 'look after each other n all that - if you see people strugglin to put a tent up, give them a hand - its what festies are all about. Share a smoke with your neighbours, offer them a brew - whatever. It's the best way I know of deterring theiving tent scum. And in defence of teenagers - sat in our camp at about 5am on Saturday mornin feelin more than a little mashed, we were visited by 2 random local young lassies (think they were called Karen n Emily) who were lovely - we chatted to them for about half an hour :D |

This is the only ned like acivity I came across and it didn't really bother me...I was drunk, perhaps he found me tedious and annoying...but it seem he was being out of line.
I doubt anyone will know but I was wearing a white t-shirt with a stick man on with the name 'Terry Waite' beneath it. The spoken word piece I drunkenly spoke was by Saul Williams.
No neds. Just one angry man.
