And the winner is!.............

The Solus Tent!
Wins hands down on line up, its diverse its interesting and it beats the main stage headliners by a mile!...... The organisers of the main stages should be looking at the line up of solus and really wondering where they went wrong.
If wickerman is being advertised as *alternative* this is the tent to be in for it to live up to expectations. There does have to be some sort of headliner for the main stages and NMA are excellent but saturday is obviously a last minute decision to try to placate some of the punters who were questioning the line up a while ago, sorry but im not that gullible
Ive paid me money and ive made me choice but i will not be buying my ticket for next year until the complete line up has been announced

You didnt have to mate, its the truth!
As i said on another thread ive no problem with Sandi whassername being on the bill but headlining!, and coming on after SAHB.... banging it out!.....crowd going nuts!.........The Alarm.......banging it out!.......crowd going nuts.......On comes Sandi!..with her accoustic folkie sound which i like, but not after jumping around like a rock crazy lunatic for the past 2 hours.(At this point id like to say whoever decided the running order has made a huge f***up by choosing an artist like Sandi as headliner when the crowd are as high as they can get after SAHB and The Alarm who are both known for their full on assault)....ermm its cold i wanna dance around so i can warm up and sing along to maybe ONE song i know (oops i forgot, there is the hit single, the ONE hit single and her DEBUT album is out today, so if i want to go and fork out cash i may even be able to sing more than one), after all we are talking headliner here, and headliner on the Saturday night!, .......thank god for Arthur and system7 least its all gonna end on a high note if your still in front of the main stage. As for me? well ive decided i will be havin the time of me life in the solus tent!, and wondering where me and my mates will be heading for this time next year...........Sorry for the Rant, but i think the so called exciting announcement is a load of pants! it wouldve been better to just leave it at the Alarm as headliners for saturday instead of what appears to be a rush or last minute deal to get someone/anyone however unsuitable that may appear contempory on the bill as headliners.
Id like if i could to ask a question?..............Why does anyone involved with booking of artists for Wickerman think that Sandi Thom is headline material? what great music and live performances (apart from supporting The Dixie Chicks at shepherds bush empire this month) can they recall?, above artists of such calibre as SAHB or The Alarm? cos id sure as hell like to know (and i bet the guys in those bands are asking the same question)

I feel that Sandi Thom is a very bad selection for this spot late on towards the end of the festival. Seams very out of place in the line up. plenty of other bands would of fitted this slot better.

Chay, you may be needing a bigger tent than you had anticipated. Its gonna be bloody busy in there come saturday night pal........bring it on!!

oh and if you guys have still got any one day tickets available for wickerman id start to think of discounting now, maybe 2 for the price of 1, unless you were clever enough to negotiate a sale or return policy

Re: And the winner is!.............

Sandi who? Alternative festival? Headlining? WTF?

I'm beginning to wonder if I've come on to the wrong website and must be reading about some half-baked festival that sorts its line-up on the basis of what the meeeja are currently wittering on about (which is, in turn what some PR company are hyping wildly). Seems very un-Wickerman to me?! Are ticket sales poor or something? :-/

Next we'll be hearing System 7 are on in the afternoon.

Ive listened to the album, and its actually not bad.

Im sure they will rich, thing is, this isnt about 2007, its about 2006, And any promoter/organiser knows, its not whats hinted at may happen that keeps their punters interested, its whats happening there and then that the punter will remember and return to if its what they want. and if you guys have booked bands like Flying Matchstick Men playing in the Solus tent who are absolutely brilliant live and are the sort of new alternative fun jump around music thats needed at a festival of this sort, why couldnt they? Glastonbury festival isnt on this year and it would have been the perfect opportunity to promote wickerman and get thousands ,yes thousands of people who would have been at worthy farm, but sadly its a chance missed...this is the MAIN stage we are talking about and since the festival began this has to be the poorest line up on the main stages and altho we and probably most people who have been before are going again to wickerman this line up is not going to increase the numbers attending which is what the festival needs to survive and theres no excuse mate, no excuse at all. As far as my friends and myself being there next year goes, its a bit like this years headliners, it looking decidedly dodgy...unless of course Auld mick jagger goes and snuffs it and the festival office proudly announce for 2007.......whats left of the rolling stones

Re: And the winner is!.............

Been reading this thread and wondering what you guys all mean by alternative? I am just curious to know what that term actually means to you all. I had never been to an alternative festival before.

I will be there this year. I was there for the first time last year and was curious then as to what that term actually means. The main stages didnt float my boat last year...I was happy floating about the acoustic area and other tents. I had fun anyway.

I am quite excited by the idea of seeing Sandi there...okay she may not be in the perfect time slot as it has been said but I am more than happy to give her a chance. You never know....she might have you all jumping aboot like nutters and surprise you all!

whatever happens...I hope you have some mad fun!:cheeky:

Re: And the winner is!.............

its not that we wont enjoy it, cos we will, but there was a great trumpeting as to how last year was the most succesful ever and grants had been secured ect and it was only gonna get better and better then this year after everyone has got their tickets the line up comes out as your older brothers school disco..but not as funny...with a jonie/sheryl wannabe, cos ms mitchell couldnt make it this year due to still being alive
Awe lets face it, apart from one or two exceptions (where you actually get the whole original band) the main stage line ups are Pants this year!
edit to say why it bothers me so much to see this happening.
For all of the 80s and some of the 90s i worked in Shaftesbury Avenue in London for an Artist Agency (Premier) and on a daily basis spoke to the likes of Metropolis, Solo, Harvey Goldsmith agency, the list was endless and i do understand the problems that goes along with the promotion and booking of acts. When i attend wickerman i have to admit that there is still that side of me comes out because its a festival that has no reason not to become a rival to any other in the uk on a big scale!. Things have a tendancy to either move at light speed or not at all (snail pace) in this business and its something that needs to be looked at because opportunities are slipping by the guys at the moment, and this is such a pivital point for wickerman and i can see it from both sides as the punter/business and its making me jump up and down with frustration, But this is not my baby , its theirs, and anything i say its not out of nastiness its cos i think the guys deserve success anyways thats why i keep having a go, not because i dont like the festival but because i really DO like it and can see the potential for everyone involved.. and its also why i praised the Skiddle team, they know their audience.

Fucking Hell mate Go-On, I have to say I have followed several threads you and one or two other people have created and you really are speaking for ( I think a lot of other people to.) You have voiced your arguments politely and reasonably and more articulatley than I could have done and I'm sure there are peole that will agree., were it not for you I doubt we would even be asking who Shandi Lager is anyway ?

The thing that appealled so much last year though, was being able to set-up a little campsite on the hill, with crash bags for the Kids, and enjoy from a safe distance..

This year I feel like I'm gonna be running little enjoyment sorties and organising an escape from the main stage committee to try and catch some of the quality new music in the Solus tent !

Re: And the winner is!.............

Thanks for that Karly, When i was out today i noticed that Ms Thoms cd altho high in the charts is subject to the cut price policy in outlets making it cheaper than a lot of chart cds around it thus boosting sales on first release and making sure it has a high placing in the week it is released (the number sold is not going to be that big as cd sales right across the board have plummeted so i wish folk would stop going on bout this artist having a number 1 single, it means nothing these days regarding an artists longevity, or talent for that matter, ask anyone in the record business, i have). The record company discount the price to retailers above its other releases making sure that all the outlets then buy in more copies and make more profit per unit sold to themselves (the retailer). HMV apart from discounting also include another cd sampler free with the purchase of the cd again ensuring maximum promotion. Im not saying this isnt anything that all record companies do at one time or another when pushing an artist regardless of merit....it also means that they will perform a live set at a discount as well as the promotion dept will be going all out to get their artist exposure, Im just suprised that the team at wickerman (having read their attitude to so called corporate/ big business machinations, have taken the hook and put her in the headline spot.....im also presuming they are able to do this cos of us all buying tickets cos we had such fun last year and are all going back, theres no pressure to sell quite as many one day tickets. Will it happen next year? will the money be there as early so they can fork out for the headline act and still be solvent, or will it be a case of everyone holding back until the complete line up is announced....this is a risky business at the best of times and you have to know your market and maximise the appeal as much as possible while retaining the core following (as the skiddle team seem to do), im sure The Wickerman team know what they are doing, or heres a thought, go coporate, then someone else pays for it all:dissappoi :dissappoi

I am in no doubt after reading most of your comments that you know a lot about how the music industry runs.However.......it seems your gripe is based on the fact that the organisers have booked Sandi Thom. How can you have such strong views about an artist you have never seen perform live or even heard her album? I will probably go and watch just to see what the fuss is about but for those who don,t want to there is plenty other stuff to do...........thats what festivals are all about isn't it? Cheers.

No its not because they have booked Sandi Thom, if you look further up its actually about placing someone in the headline spot that if you look at the rest of the line up for saturday is about as unsuitable for a headliner as its possible to get, as well as the fact there is NO reason why she is headining above artists who have a much more extensive and far reaching catalogue plus as someone else said, there are many other bands much more suitable for the spot considering that it was apperently decided to go for a much more rock orientated line up for saturday. And as far as there being other things to do , yes i totally agree and again if you look up the thread i have already said where i will be. Festivals are unfortunately judged by there line ups when it comes to attracting people to go to them.....if Sandi had been placed headliner on friday and NMA on saturday i dont think there would be any debate about any of this,..its all about running order, the majority of people will be fired up to the max on saturday evening, more so with 3 rock bands prior to Sandi coming on, As you know it gets real cold at night up there regardless of the weather during the day and whats needed is something like last year with alabama3 where the crowd are jumping along and really going for it, i havent heard all the album by sandi, i have heard bits of it, its very pleasant and easy on the ear and much repect to her as a musician but she doesnt have the huge fan base that will go to the festie just to see her, she will be facing a large group of people who are coming to the climax of a brilliant weekend (some of them in a state of ermm higher consciousness) and those people will want to bawl and shout and sing and dance.....if she pulls it off i will be the first to offer big respect, if she doesnt thats the memory a lot of people will be taking home.

Heres one for you then Chay........I sat in a room with two guys,
One is called Lawrence and he was discussing a buiilding called Turnmills, he wanted the other guy (peter, my boss) to go look at it because he had an idea for a club night he was calling TRADE and wanted investors. After hearing about it and having a look at the building and discussing it some more i said to Peter he had to go for it! this will work........"No it wont" said peter "no-one will queue to get into a club at 4 in the morning" and loads of other excuses, i was going mental! but he didnt go for it and i just didnt have the money then to invest........the rest (if you are/were a clubber) is history... thats maybe why im as passionate about wickerman, all the ingrediants are there, i can see them

Re: And the winner is!.............

Thanks for your reply Dalkeithalan...I can see your point far clearer now regarding how you feel about The Wickerman. There are some very interesting and valid points. I can understand your frustration totally. I am still gonna be there and I will enjoy myself anyway...me?....am happy wherever i am so long as I have my jammie dodgers and flask o tea!:D (easy pleased)

However, call me unejukated and maybe i missed it somewhere but could someone, mibbes even yer good self explain the term "Alternative". I am just wondering what that means. And maybe that means loads o different things for different folk in a festy context.

Cheers!
