What Are We About?
In the box - Many DJs today as they have lost sight of why they are there and have forgotten how to enjoy what they do? As DJs we believe that you get back from a crowd what you give! Above all we like to please the crowd and pride ourselves on not just being DJs but performers and musicians alike. A DJ has the power control people's emotions. A truly great DJ, just for one moment, can make a whole room fall in love!
Who Built That House? is collective of DJs, Musicians and Promoters from the North West and have been hosting nights since 2004. After returning from Ibiza frustrated with the lack of opportunities in the South Lakes area, Sy Lyon decided the only way to provide for himself and like minded people was to start holding events and so Who Built That House? was born! He soon joined forces with another local DJ (and now production partner) Phil Caine to promote their first nights. SoulFunk, showcased their upfront blend of Soulful American House and US Garage and Underground DJs, was a night of Electro and Techno. From then on the parties just got bigger and better. During this time there wasnt a major venue in the area that they didnt play at.
In Jan 2006 after two years successfully pioneering the South Lakes club scene with WBTH?, they moved to Manchester to further their careers where they quickly got a residency for "Underground DJs" at Joy Bar. Ironically once moving to Manchester they got a lot of new opportunities back in the South Lakes the first being to host a big one off event at new venue in Barrow, The Canteen. Never one to turn down an opportunity they agreed to the challenging event and it was aptly named, philosifunk. Due to the scale of the event they put together a high profile line up which included Paul Wilkins (Hed Kandi) and Jon Constantine (Kujay Da Da / Ibiza Residents). Needless to say the night was a success!
Unfortunately for Sy, half way through the year Phil had to move back to the South Lakes to be Daddy. Subsequently he has branched off on his own to promote Underground DJs and concentrate on production. Moving forward 2006 ended with a bang with Sy landing a new venue in Barrow an introducing a new night which was imply named House Music, held at popular hang out The Empire. The first event was on Christmas Day and was rocking with like minded hedonists!
2007 was a busy year for WBTH? with SoulFunk now at Bar Five, House Music and new night Retrospect, both at the Empire. All three nights enjoyed a well supported and successful summer seasons of events. With Underground DJs no longer under the WBTH? umbrella something had to be to done to accommodate the electronic music scene, Electric Kitchen was served! The first events were again held at The Empire and whipped up an electric recipe with plenty of digital flavour and one hell of a kick!
In need of a different challenge, Head Honcho Sy Lyon decided to leave Manchester and the South Lakes area in his wake and relocate to Lancaster. With this change SoulFunk continued with at new weekly residency at Mood, one of the hottest bars in the city. There was also new weekly residency for Electric Kitchen at Cuba which featured special guests John Kelly, Krysko (Warehouse Project), Miss Divine (La Vita) and the areas finest up and coming talent. Plus plenty of visual shenanigans including Dancers, Stilt Walkers, Fire Performers and Angle Grinders.
In 2008 now hosting events simply as Who Built That House?, combining individual music policies into a celebration of House has seen the brand go from strength to strength in Lancaster. With a weekly residency at Cuba at the beginning of the year as well as second year at Mood hosting exclusive events throughout the year it is proving to be the way forward in the area. In May WBTH? moved to The Lounge, Lancasters only afterhours venue, where it played out the year.
2009 has brought and added direction for WBTH? in the Lancaster. In April they hosted a new acoustic night, ARKoustic at The Gregson Centre, a charity event in aid of Shelter for the homeless. WBTH? will also be continuing their Bank Holiday residency at Mood throughout the year, keep an eye out for forthcoming events...GET INVOLVED!
