Another festival cancelled.... discuss!

Wild in the Country has been cancelled this weekend, another festival in a growing line of cancellations this summer

What's happening! Is it due to scaremongering about recessions, high fuel prices? Are people really feeling the squeeze yet or just being caeful because of what they've heard on the news?

Or is it a symptom of there being far too many festivals this year?

As long as Kendal Calling doesn't get affected i'm not arsed.

I do think theres too many festivals cropped up over the past few years and the market has become saturated. Plus the fact of scaremongering doesn't help at all.

Re: Another festival cancelled.... discuss!

it could be a combination of things, the tickets for Glasto didn't sell as previous yers have this was put down to two main resons

1. Jay-z headlining

2. the weather

I think it has to do with the current price of everything, its not just fuel thats gone up the general price of living has increased substantially this year, the squeeze is affecting people in a big way people may have less free cash than they did this time last year which may account for them being very selective in where they go and what they do.

Also, wild in the country is too far down south, probably too expensive, and there are just too many festivals.

Lets hope the Wickerman is not effected!

I cant help but think that the whole Jay-Z excuse for Glastonbury has slightly racist undertones to it.
I'm sure if Eminem had been headlining there wouldn't have been so much of a stink kicked up about the whole thing.

Re: Another festival cancelled.... discuss!

It had crossed my mind then I dismissed it for the whole its a guitar band festival thing, and we dont want hip hop.

It seems to have paid off for them as his set was a succsess

What people forget is glastonbury had increased its capacity by around 26,000 people. Thats the size of the wickerman alone.

It had nothing to do with Jay Z, that was just Oasis being upset they didnt get asked. The press reporting on the mud for the last 3 years is enough to put anyone off, i mean how many people actually want to pay £140 plus the rest to lose all your personal belongings, trash your car and get a disease. Loads of fun.

It hasn't been an exclusively guitar based festival for a long time.
How do you account for acts like the Prodigy and Orbital playing on the main stages in years gone by?

I'm not a huge fan of Jay-Z, but Hip Hop should have its place alongside all the other genres in a festival that is supposed to have an all inclusive, hippie vibe - even though it's been taken over by corporate sponsors and sells tickets that are completely unaffordable to many.

The fact is that `Jay ZZzzzzz` didn`t have enough big hit singles to fill a headline set, it`s got fuck all to do with race or musical genre. His set was weak, and if the crowd wanted to hear samples of other peoples songs as a headline act, why not get Norman Cook to DJ. Personally i think if they wanted to stay clear of rock music, Basement Jaxx would have done a much better job of creating a party atmosphere - and they have hits to play.

If they wanted Hip Hop - Kanye West !

On the cancellations - i reckon most people are holding onto their cash until the weather forecasts improve.

the fact that evis was booking led zepin but they wonted far to much - and then second choice was jay-z . bit poor. but i didnt see him so dont care . weather was why people didnt wont to go and to be fair they will be gutted now . the line up hasnt been as good since i first went in 2003? i think it was rem, oasis, moby - that is so much better than every lieup each year after

i bought a ticket this time and it was worth it like -

cost wise i would go to loads of festivals but at 100+ for tickets then travle then class a then food,it adds up, its ok when your 18 living with mam n dad but as time goes on there are other prioritys in life , cant even do wickerman - thou i did walk out me job so that doesnt help like Laughing

Generally people are staying closer to home this year to save cash so it wouldn`t suprise me if the Wickerman numbers are down on last year.

Although a good forecast for that weekend could see it rammed.

I actually didn't look at where wild in the country was being held, mackie told me it was down south so I went along with it, he will now feel the true power of the dark side.
