C.A.L.M

C.A.L.M (The Campaign Against Living Miserably) is a charity targeted at young men aged between 15-35. The campaign offers help, information and advice via a phone and web service. Anyone, regardless of age, gender or geographic location can call the line.

Working with people from the music, sport and club scenes, C.A.L.M encourages young men to 'open up' and sort out their problems. C.A.L.M has a strong and very real presence through club flyers, posters, beermats, gigs and in the media. We're always on the look out for new club promoters to work with so get in touch with jamiescahill@thecalmzone.net for more info

There are many reasons why young men need a campaign like C.A.L.M. Everyone has their own life, with different interests, circumstances, pressures and problems. But men aren't supposed to talk about stuff, so it can be hard to know where or who to go for help when life gets on top of them.

Go to www.thecalmzone.net for more info....

Check out www.calm500100.co.uk for exclsuive Stephen Merchant/David Baddiel video's and games...

If this is a charity then fair enough, but if Gordon Brown is funding this bollocks with my tax money then it will really piss me off!

I take it you've never suffered from depression then?

Re: C.A.L.M

I'm not sure how anybody with any real experience of depression could call the work that an organisation like C.A.L.M do as 'bollocks'.

If people really suffering from depression were able to just 'deal with it' then they wouldn't be depressed in the first place.

I suffered from depression and low self esteem for a very long time and the 'deal with it', or 'you've nothing to be depressed about' lectures had absolutely no effect on me ever taking steps to change my situation.

I've no doubt C.A.L.M is a charity based operation, but I'd quite happily see my tax money being spent on an initiative in helping young males understand that it's o.k to ask for help if they need it.

I'm sure a great deal of the males who post on this board have struggled in their lives at one point or another and just tried to ignore it by going out and getting wasted for a few days, instead of dealing with it by asking for help or discussing it with someone.

The trouble is the problem is still there when you sober up, and if you're depressed, it becomes an endless cycle of unhappiness.

I feel quite strongly about this and really don't see how an organisation like C.A.L.M can be bollocks.

Re: C.A.L.M

We work in a similar way to M.I.N.D but C.A.L.M are a little more dynamic and work with club promoters and record labels to spread the word through music realted events. By being involved with events like Creamfields and having Dizzee Rascal, James Zabiela and Sasha on board really helps us to get the message across in a non health organsiation way.

Not all people need to use the helpline or website, for the one's that don't need it then thats great. It's the one's that do need it that we are there for, or even their mates...

Re: C.A.L.M

I've re-edited my post.

I must have put M.I.N.D as I did a mental health training course with them through work.

What I actually meant to say was C.A.L.M, but either way, I support the work of any organisation that tackles the issue of mental health.

Re: C.A.L.M

I did a lot of work with CALM when it was originally launched in Cumbria, and if I remember rightly CALM and Insomnia were involved with each other - i've got the news letter somewhere still.

I wouldnt say I have ever been depressed, but working with CALM made me realise that its a lot better to talk to someone than to not. I have plenty of people around me to talk too, but a lot of young males feel that they dont, CALM offers them that resource.

I did the goin out and getting wasted for age before seeing a counciller.

Must admit, all these years of constant excesses do seem to take there toll on your mind and body, and it's good to have charities like this that are there to help anyone with issues.

Re: C.A.L.M

I'm sane......

I'm afraid i dont understand this....

I don't really see whats to be depressed about...

That mind sound callous to a lot of people out there but i really dont, i can quite easily get depressed myself about all the time, trivial life things that everybody on this planet endures from day to day - i simply dont let it happen - maybe thats called masking it off and not accepting it but ive never needed medication or doctors... Ive had to get myself out of it and into a more positive frame of mind in which to continue living - If i was depressed that much i'd be dead! Afterall whats the point??????????????

I do understand this but i dont understand how it can make people like they are feel so strongly about it , i do believe there is a thing called depression, its not an illness its a state of sense and mind that is a loop of suffering with a non future predicting feeling about it...

I'm not saying i dont think there should be charities supporting this kind of thing at all - there should...Its obviously there cos of the claim and suffering and is now established as an 'illness'.

Fundamentally........These charities wouldn't need to be there if the problem wasn't developed to such a stage where its become apparent and it should be stopping this thats the aim here....

I am only one person and nobody will ever know what i am thinking,

THIS IS MY HEAD!!!...................This is my head!!!!

Re: C.A.L.M

I remember working with CALM when foot and mouth was happening. Try telling a lot of young farmers that there was nothing to be depressed about.

Different things affect people in different ways, some people have the ability to deal with stuff, others need a helping hand.

I worked for DEFRA when foot and mouth was on and these young farmers soon lost their depression when we sorted out their Government & EU grants for them.

Prize cattle or brand new merc - you decide?

Even the sheepdogs got paid £25 an hour! Funny how a sheepdog can't spend its wages...
