Re: Statik

tadger

I'd just like to say that if any of my words have been construed as pissing and moaning, or even as negative critisism, then it was not my intention for them to be that way.

I'm looking at the scene from my own perspective and that's how I've seen it in the past 10 years.
Now is the time that change is a real possibility if the storm can be weathered, which, Gaz, you're doing something about and I applaud that.

They say that things have to get worse before they can get better and I'd like to think that Carlisle is in another transitional phase at the moment, as it won't be long before there is a bigger student population. This will be the time more specialist nights can flourish.

However, that said, I really don't know where good old fashioned house music fits into the musical tastes of a younger generation.
I do agree with Wheadon that N-Joi are only known for one tune and it is still in the realms of relying on the old guard to fill a night, but even if your night is filled with an older crowd they can still enjoy it for what it is.

I'm not trying to hate on anybody putting on a specialist night, in fact, it's quite the opposite as I really admire people for sticking their necks on the line - I did it for four years with varying degrees of success, but still have emotional trackmarks from being run over by the train too many times.

If the House scene in general could be met with the same kind of enthusiasm the crowds show at some of the other alternative nights, then we wouldn't be having this debate.

Just look at Club Olio, that gets the place completely rammed off the back of good promotional work and a couple of local lads sticking records on to cater for the current fads of the 'Nu-Rave', NME reading teenagers.

I guess what I'm basically trying to get at is that House music isn't really that cool at the minute, and therefore, it can go back underground and become healthy simply because the people involved are there for the love of it rather than its fashionable status.

These are just my opinons on current music trends.
Everybody involved in trying to cater for an alternative crowd should keep doing what they're doing if the passion is there.

Yeah, I agree with tim. I'm not knocking you at all. I realise what your doing and understand that the amount you put in compared to the amount you get out is two different levels. I used to do this professionaly (well semi professionaly?) and I agree that carlisle is a tough nut to crack. Also applaud what you as statik are trying to do.

But tim has hit the nail right on the head. Carlisle doesn't want House anymore. It's the kids who go clubbing, and you need to give them what they want, week in and week out. And N-JOI arn't really known for being dj's which I'm not knocking as they probably shit hot, but people remeber them for one song and that wont warrent the people of carlisle to spend there hard earned money. House needs to become underground again (just like the wombles) before it reaches another peak. Different styles even. It's peaks and troughts. Tony Wilson was the only man who ever really understood that. He was right about rave, the hacienda, youth movements and digital music (mp3's etc) It's just how it goes!

Keep at it though because it's what you and we love.

Thanks for everyones support, its just what we need, have taken the construcitve coments in a good way!!

N-joi we booked as a treat and they havnt played here before so we though why not,we arnt going down that road of booking overpriced has been DJs just trying a one off to see what its like.

We have some quality underground DJs coming up in June/July gigs.

I have to dissagree that carlisle dosnt want house anymore, you have to believe in your music you have passion for.otherwise statik would not be doing anynights.

Money is a major issue for us,but we shall not skimp on production setup costs to please the ones that want to get in for a quid or two less, that our foundations to build upon.

Is it really to much to ask to get 200 odd regular underground clubbers in each month,i dont think it is.time will tell.

No it aint too much to ask.

There's 100,000 people live here.

But a quid or two less may encourage a couple more people through the door?

hopefully more than a couple!

Yous seem to be daein alreet tho, and I have nae idea what I'm on about. I may even make it down one week if I can sell a kidney ;)

Could another reason be the general economics of the country?? This, as a reason, people not goin out and spending?

Its becoming ridicously expensive to live at the moment, prices on everything are goin up, fuel, food, general everyday living has become an expensive past time, the country is on the verge of a lending crisis possibly not to the same scale as the good ol' USA has just seen but it will be harsh for us.

could this be contributing to the reson people aren't spending??

The smoking ban has screwed clubbing as well!
Posted 17th Apr 07:56am   [quote]

ARTY

a big contributing factor is money and the smoking ban like the amount of times me and my m8s have ended up just staying in and having a sesh in the house with the decks on is ridiculous! its no good when you walk in a club and the dancefloor is empty because every1 is outsie having a puff or the fact you can have every1 round your house listening to what you want to hear and gettin pissed for less than 20 quid. and its a damn shame the whole idea about going out was to meet new people, listen to music you hadnt heard b4 but the fact is in this current enviroment its very difficult to change this trend. as far as nights like statik are concerned though as long as i have money to go i'll be supporting them all the way because without people actually gettin on board and showing up to these nights then sadly its all a futille effort!

BadHoon

I said i wouldnt get on to the no-one havin any money anymore do...

'But a quid or two less may encourage a couple more people through the door'

What i will say is , statik is only £3 in before midnight - if people cant afford that then there is something wrong - Its nearly £3 a pint in most places. It only goes up to a fiver at midnight. The place shuts at 4. So theoretically you can be there for 7hours for £3. Thats a BARGAIN!!! Where else can you say that about in town?

Every once in a while i think the boat should be pushed out and a bigger name booked for a few more quid to pay no the door - it mixes it up a bit - At the end of the day Statik is a night - not a club.

I was on about paying $10 (me pound sign don't work!) to watch N-Joi, or anyone else in Carlisle for that matter.

Personally I won't pay that, thought $8 for Paul Woolford @ Uber wasn't too bad, but the night was shit.

Right about drinks prices tho, I can easily wax $60 (these dollar signs are pissing me off) on a night out. Money way beyond my means to be bored stupid. Fuck, I'm turing into a right miserable bastard.

Hardly encourages me to part with my 'hard-earned' student loan.

Yeah agree with you andy, but some people like to stay in bars now that they can after 11pm! with the 24 hour licencing laws, punters have the option to have a quiet late drink instead of a banging late drik and I feel this is a major contrubuting factor to many larger places shutting down. Now even the wheel is shut and that's owned by CG group so there can't be any money in this place at all

what made your paul woolford at uber night "shit" mate?

This is definately one of the best threads that's been discussed on here in a long time !

It's nice to see everyones opinion on the state of the town - with some great constructive critisicm thrown in for good measure.

heres an idea...why dont ya run a skiddle board night with selected members picked to play

surely if you have the hours of 9-4 to cater for and 5 dj's all playing 1 &1/2 sets surely them 5 will have enough support to fill out or at least attemt to fill out the venue

there is 5 people on this thread alone that i know dj

tim , mike , lockie , ray & gaz...just an idea that may just see some fruit!

Posted 17th Apr 02:30pm   [quote]

biglockie

I'd be up for that!!!

ARTY

Posted 17th Apr 03:18pm   [quote]

Gaz Foskett

thats a damn shame

Posted 17th Apr 03:31pm   [quote]

Albanian

Ki - not a dig at Uber, had some good nights there, but that night there was no atmosphere and the music bored the arse off me. Which was a shame cos I'v really enjoyed Woolford before.

It could have been any night anywhere and I would have said the same.

But that of course is just my opinion.

No offence intended.

who wants on the guest list its only £8/10 lol
