Re: Statik

Your not very good at making a point are you. Drum & bass is jungle which is more than 15 years old. Dub comes from reggae which both emphasise my point of the sampling.

When you start bringing in John Cage we may as well go back to Jungle drums, then the invention of transistors and hey presto you've got a 909 and a 303.

But seen as you started it, the person credited with making the first electronic instrument was Luigi Russolo in 1913 and in 1920 the first synthesiser was invented by Theremin. These are cited as John Cages main influences.

I dont think you want to be a twat, I think you are a twat, and if we really want to kick the arse out of it we can say it was invented by Gilbert in 1600 with the invention of electrical energy.

My term yanks is referring to American dj's, including the Detroit dj's you mention who cannot understand the different titles the British use. To them Acid, jungle, breakbeat etc etc ..... its all house to them.

I'm really enjoying this thread.

The breakbeat hardcore/Jungle scene is a little more than 15 years old, but its maturity into Drum & Bass is, in my opinion, something more than simply copying the styles that came before it.

It was urban blues music for the later part of the 20th century and was a step away from the false, E'd up happiness of House music.

Dub does come from reggae, but Dubstep itself has taken its stylings from Reggae, Drum & Bass, Breaks, Techno and other forms of electronic music.

To say it's an easy step from transistor radios to the 303 and the 909 is like saying somebody invented the saxophone because of the piano.

They both might be classed as musical instruments, but they don't exist as a proper continuation from one another.

The Roland company who made cheap electronic machines tried to emulate real instruments and failed, which lead to one of the greatest accidents in modern electronic music.

I presume you are talking about the Detroit DJ's who travelled to places like the Music Box in Chicago and created their own version of house, which was the sound they called Techno.

That doesn't in anyway reflect my point of Americans referring to electronic music as techno.

To say that everything is House could be taken in the same way as calling everything Disco; as that is where the majority of modern dance music has stemmed from.

I saw Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson a few months ago and their tunes all followed the same style.

They may say they cannot understand the pigeon holes the British make for certain sub-genres, but everything they played was techno, and it didn't cross the boundaries into anything else as if they were unaware of any difference.

I will admit that you can trace a lineage back to house the same way you can trace the lineage from house to disco, but breakbeat music owes more to funk and hip hop and reggae culture than simply regurgitiating House music.

It's hard nowadays to come up with anything brand new, but my point of being more interested in what the younger folks are up to stands up to the fact that they are more willing to experiment and create something different.

Re: Statik

My point about the flyers - original techno gangsters isn't going to attract the carlisle house crowd, presumably the ones gaz is trying to attract.

Design might not matter a lot to you, it doesn't to some people, but to most a good flyer catches people's attention in the first place. Let's be honest a lot of people that go out don't know what a mixer does let alone what it looks like, so why put a picture of one on the flyer, some people would see it as specialist and let it put them off the night. The flyer needs to be aimed at the crowd you are trying to attract

Re: Statik

Flyers schmyers, doesn't matter what they look like if nobody sees em! We were looking for them & didn't see any, I met a lass who'd been handing them out but not until we were in the club. In Newcastle the flyposters are totally in your face, you'll get flyers put on your table, in your hand, they'll ask where you're going & compete- it's annoying but it's effective! Don't worry so much what the flyers look like just get more of them out there!!!

I think you will find that 'up close and personal' describes spirit better.

Theres no where in carlisle more claustrophobic than the basement surely!!

Oh for fuck sake!

I can't come to this one either because I'm partying in a forest that weekend.

Re: Statik

Spirit is bang on as a venue, in my slightly biased opinion...

Top floor for the decks, sound and lighting set-up, with a bar... Middle floor as a more 'chilled out floor' with full bar and couches etc...

People can come and go between the floors and plenty room outside for the smokers amongst you...

Also slightly off the beaten track, people who've been coming down for a first time are sort of suprised its there, but generally impressed once they go inside...

Woods and his parents have done a cracking job of updating the gaff, from restaurant upto the bars...

Re: Statik

I spent nearly 3 weeks in the place sanding floors, painting walls and cleaning shit up for a couple of chinky's and a can of red bull. I do have to admit though the "last supper" mural was my idea. The place seems to be a little epicentre of something different in carlisle. It's like the brickyard without the grebo stigmata which is something that's never bothered me but has bothered many a person in this town.

And who ever white is? Tim's not a twat. You are. You probably think Rupert the bear is cool and you probably drink blue wkd out of pint glasses you classy cunt. SO FUCK OFF.

Re: Statik

Boys boys boys! you are funny, I've had a little chuckle at this thread, ya's take everythin so seriously, for god's sake lighten up, are we not just talking about partyin after all. Obviously i'm no expert about any of this stuff, to be quite honest I couldn't give a shit if ya play , house, techno , proggy, etc etc bla bla bla, as long as it sounds good, the crowd are up for it n it makes me wanna dance me ass off, I fuckin love it, and I hav to say although i am obviously biased, statik has always delivered, even though punters hav been a bit thin on the ground, the ones that hav made it down hav all been well up for it! They have picked some daft nights to have them on, like, half way between two bank holidays was a slight error Gaz, but ya live learn, and I reckon the next one is gonna absolutely rock, cos that Steve Linney's stuff sounds ace!! jst need a few more people to cotton on now!!

And jst for the record, I've been distributing a lot of them flyers, I hav done my best considering it is just a labour of love, but it is a very depressin task indeed to spend any length of time trying to promote a house night to a load of morons dressed in devil horns on Botchergate, believe me!! and I think the design is fine, uncomplicated, perhaps not as eyecatchin and professional as other nights but for our purposes, grand!!

ey-up, that was me that lass!! Yeah I know wot ya mean about getting the flyers out there but its not easy in Carlisle, the council won't let ya put posters anywhere , and other than standing out all night flyerin, there's not that many places that'll let ya leave them anywhere, tight buggers! Flyerin in Carlisle is no fun cos of the chav:party people ratio being the way it is!! it was soul destroying flyerin the night basshunter was on in mood, as my flyers were gettin chucked on the floor, the queue for basshunter was steadily growing, wot a shan! says it all really, anyway we had a grand night at statik when n-joi were up, you and yr mate were bang up for it, need a few more like you in Carlisle, ya should def try and get through for the next one!!

Re: Statik

Distributing flyers on Botchergate is probably something that could be improved on. Speak to Paul in S4, make sure he puts them in all the bags, find a couple of people at the art college to make sure everywhere has posters and flyers, the halls included. It's a couple of days hard work, but once you've got a nice system in place you'll reap the rewards. Botchergate is a none starter, those people are on that street because they want to be, and you aint ever going to change that.

Very true fella. Spirit is slightly different, and thats its key. Much in a way that Concrete first was when it opened, but it seems to have gone more 'mainstream' these days for some reason. Also agree with you about Brickyard, never bothered me either but a lot of people were always like 'oh that grebo/rock place'...
